Kuerten plans Wimbledon return in 2003

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten plans to return to Wimbledon in 2003 after two years away from the London grass courts.

Kuerten, who had an erratic year following hip surgery in February, aims to play all the grand slams and Masters Series tournaments as well as some smaller competitions, the Brazilian said in a statement on Friday.

"I'm also going to Wimbledon," the three-time French Open champion said.

"I couldn't play there for two years and, like it or not, it's a grand slam and I miss playing there.

"I'm not a grass specialist but perhaps I can play well there."

Kuerten missed Wimbledon for the second year running in June saying he needed to rest his hip after crashing out of the French Open in the fourth round.

Prior to pulling out of Wimbledon in 2001, Kuerten had expressed his unhappiness over the tournament's seedings policy.

Wimbledon seeds men players according to their performances and ability on grass and not according to the world rankings, a policy that has irritated clay court specialists.

Kuerten's Wimbledon best was a quarter-final spot in 1999 when he lost to Andre Agassi.
