His serve doesn't work so good on this surface though.
At *3-4 in the third set he saved 2 BPs (15-40) and then broke right after.
Federer next

Ivo's serve worked in the 3rd set. He only lost 3 service points in the 3rd set, but they were all in one game. Clutch win! So not quite as easy a scoreline as it sounds.

He made 73% of his 1st serves and won 87% of 1st serve points, that's higher than his averages!

His serve is OK on this surface...Ivo trained with Verdasco and also played doubles with him so Verdasco has more experience in returning Ivo's serve.
Let's see the rematch with Roger now.

 IVO!!!

The Dr. comes through yet again in a tough situation. I thought Verde had him at 3-4 but Ivo had other plans. Man has he put it together this year. As for his next match, third time this year is the charm.

Side question: How far does he have to go to break the top 20?

This win gives Ivo 35 ranking points which tie him with Hewitt at #20 in the projected rankings. I see however that in the current rankings he is also tied with Hewitt in points, but Hewitt is ranked one spot ahead of him instead of tied. Does anyone know why this is, that they could be tied in ranking points yet they don't have a tie for ranking? Is there some tie breaker system when the points are the same? Head to head results sure wouldn't put Hewitt ahead :)

It looks like Nalbandian is the only player ranked around him who is still active this week and has a realistic chance to sneak up from behind and pass Ivo. Everyone else ranked around him is either not playing or has lost. And Nalbandian would have to beat the Karlovic/Federer winner to pass Ivo in ranking. So unless Ivo pulls a huge upset he will finish the year tied for #20 in ranking points with Hewitt! That's coming up from a low of #118 ranking in April.

well done ivo
Credit to verdasco though. he played great first set.
verdasco is coming of from reaching finals at st petrersburg.

the surface is playing like rebound ace dead surface. actually i think it helped ivo's ground game today.

Now beat federer.

Disgraceful slow court.

I miss the carpet
agreed
the surface is a big joke.

Stupid organizers they only take two players advice and change the surface. I don't know are there only two players in ATP>? really ridicoulous.
Even clay courts play better than this surface.

It is slow.

I would better prefer watching some serve-and-volleying and ace-fests. Otherwise almost whole game nowadays consists of rallying... and seeing more rallies in indoor tournaments is not refreshing at all...

Karlovic matches often turn into serve contests.

However, it must be noted that Karlovic in recent months has won a lot of non-tie break sets.
