Van Lottum qualified for the main draw, but he lost today in the first round to Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-2. :( oh well, at least Schalken is still alive in the draw... good luck to him. ;)

Top seed Hewitt, No. 2 Schalken bounced from Stockholm Open
SportsTicker

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Ticker) - It was a day of upsets Wednesday at the $650,000 Stockholm Open, with top seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and second seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands highlighting the list of those eliminated.

Hewitt, who advanced to the second round in a walkover on Tuesday when Thomas Enqvist withrew before the match with a shoulder injury, was shocked by unseeded Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The world No. 1 is just 43 points in front of Andre Agassi in the ATP Champions Race. Agassi reached the second round in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

Hewitt had his lead for the No. 1 world ranking reduced after he was forced to drop out of last week's Tennis Masters Series - Madrid with a viral infection. The Australian is without a title since winning his second Wimbledon crown and is 54-13 on the year.

Schalken was felled by unseeded Taylor Dent of the United States in the first round, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. The hard-serving American improved to 2-0 lifetime against Schalken.

Also eliminated Wednesday were No. 4 seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden, who lost to Tommy Robredo of Spain, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and fifth seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, who was upset by Fabrice Santoro of France, 6-1, 6-3.

One seeded player did win on Wednesday. No. 7 Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand manhandled Robin Soderling of Sweden, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the second round.

In other matches Wednesday, Swedish qualifier Joachim Johansson beat Spain's Albert Portas, 6-3, 6-3, and Moroccan Hicham Arazi routed Swedish wild card Magnus Norman, 6-2, 6-2.

The winner of this hardcourt tournament receives $85,500.
