Re: Instanbul R2: (1)Roger Federer def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-2 7-5

Decent performance from Fed. Good performance by Jarko in the 2nd set.

How was his forehand?

Definitely some better serving from Roger than last tournament. Hard to judge his baseline game when he kept rushing forward; a different opponent will maybe not let him do that as much.

Re: Instanbul R2: (1)Roger Federer def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-2 7-5

Serve very good for Federer. 9 or 10 aces I think. A couple of aggressive df. No break points faced.

Net play good. Generally continued to played aggressive and came in and destroyed anything short.

Forehand looked pretty strong. Ran around a lot of second serve returns to hit the strong forehand return. Backhand a bit inconsistent. He went for a lot of lines, probably more than he needed to, and missed more than he should have, or it would have been more of a beat down.

Nieminen hung in there well until 5-5 in the second set, but one could see Federer was on the verge, and it was only a matter of time. Jarkko couldn't really read/handle the Federer inside out forehand and was often left flat footed. When his first serve deserted him, he was in trouble.

^ Yes, nice to see a full stadium for a second round match. Federer earning his appearance fee as usual.

He mixed it up very well. He will try to keep his matches shorter . That is what he needs at FO if his aim is to get at least SF. Instanbul and Madrid will be use as building his game gradually to FO. Fed does not need those titles. He does not need to be favorite for FO at 34 almost.:)

easy as it possibly gets for Fed. Heh, but seven games isn't bad, poor Jarkko.

Apart from the usual backhand errors when pressed, I think Federer played pretty well.
