In the past 3 tournaments, he has lost sets to mannarino, cilic, was on the verge of losing to his biggest turkeys dimitrov and raonic, struggled against Fucsocvics, got pushed to tie breaks by Mirza Basic and Steve JOhnson and lost a set to brianless ballbsher Tennys freaking sandgren! He has been playing at 50% against the rest of the tour and 500% and yet he retrieves like a mad man and plays 500% only against Federer in Cincincatti...making it the easiest and most NID match he has played in the last 3 tournaments so far.

Will Nole repeat the same thing at the US open? Will he lose sets against Gasquet, struggle in a 5 setter against Pouile only to peak against ROger and dispatch him in straight sets?

Djokovic always play 500% against Federer/Nadal, he regards them as the best and built his career beating them. Nothing new.

Novak experiments quite a bit with his game with lesser players, putting himself in different situations as to better prepare himself for tougher matches ahead

of course not. if he plays 500% against Federer, then he must play 1000% against Kei.

TBH, he was better today than in the Cincy final, Federer just imploded by himself that match.

Those who are not here just to troll can read this :
How fatherhood and family helped 2018 US Open favorite Novak Djokovic's overcome his two-year slump

For many reasons I think psychologically Nole played tennis because he felt lonely in Kopraonik with over busy parents with their pizzeria. He played Tennis because he wants people to see he exists.
That is probably why he shows this attraction whore personnality that irritates most of MTF members.

All his career long he was frustrated because love from fans went principally to Federer and Nadal.

That is the major moto that drove him the dominant player he became in 2011 and 2015/2016 : get more love than Federer and Nadal.

When he owned all 4 majors he probably realized he will never get Nadal and Federer popularity regardless of his achievements and that drove him into depression and a dump of motivation.
Pain in elbow emphatising everything.

When he was dominant he was often leaded one set and a break even by humble players like Bellucci Lopez or Verdasco and he got that typical Slavian clic in his mind that drove him into painting the lines and finally winning.

In 2016 2017 that clic never existed anymore and he was just overtrying and piling UEs

That added to the fact he is quite arrogant in western standards (but most Slavian people are said arrogant by western people because humility and politically correct attitude are not values in Slavian World and often considered as sissy attitude, Males should be Males in Slavian World) made him look like he was not focused anymore.

I guess he finally found another motivation not in himself but in Stefan's eyes.

But of course when motivation comes from outside it is lower than from inside because it is less animal and more intellectual.

He is on court to win now probably a little bit more bored and unpatient when facing Sandgren and Fucsovics than Nadal and Federer.

But he showed he can be clutchy on important points.

Do not ask Slavian people to behave like organised consistant people, madness and huge feelings are often the moto that drives Slavan people into achieving big things.

And it is difficult to feel big vs Sandgren or Fucsovics.
