Is Andy Murray too defensive?

Murray's Murray and will stay Murray.
He's not realy defensive, he just doesn't want to play with to match risk. He's not as offensive as Federer is. But he can defend himself good, so you can say he's defensive if you like! But I don't! In the match Vs. ToJo at Queens he was verry offensive with his FH.

It was interesting in Safin's aftermatch interview he said his plan had been to target Andy's forehand as the weaker shot. I think Andy's forehand is reasonaby strong and accurate, but often on his backhand he just slices it back in play with very little on it. This is where I guess the view that he's being too defensive comes from. I think to a degree his physique and his defensiveness on that side go hand in hand, when he beefs up his upper body I'm sure he'll begin to rip the ball more to be more offensive. Only time will tell (so long as he puts in the gym work).

murray is a professional hacker. but he is that because he doesn't have the offensive weapons yet at this level...

He needs to work on his build....he lacks the power and fitness to handle hard hitters

I agree that he needs to work on his physical side but when he gets that sorted he will be amazing. He has the power to be with the big boys.

He's only 18 so he's got a few more years to get to the top of his game which he will do. Come on, he's gonna be top 100 for sure at the end of this year.

Not sure if he has the power or mentality to reach the top.

Yes he is too defensive

Until he has the power and athleticism of the other players we won't have much idea how good he will be. From the looks of things that will take at least 2 years, possibly longer.

So next year he will charge up the rankings and then he will plateau until he has the basic power you need to compete will the big guys.

The power will come. But it will take time.

It would be nice if someone were to phone Tony Blair and make him aware (not that he doesn't have bigger concerns ... like terrorists) that it's 2005 and not 1965 please stop sending out these soft hitters that think tennis is still played with a wooden racquet and that it is all about dinks and volleying ....

you have no idea what you're talking about do you? clearly you've not watched him play as that sounds nothing like Murray.

the dinks actually sounds like him. and the point is its another british player that is not now nor will he ever be a particularly big hitter. apparently murray has played on clay most of his life. yet he couldn't be further removed from the kind of hitting most top clay courters produce. and the argument that he is young is crap.

He pretty much tries to get the ball back into play with nothing on it, and wins when the opponent makes an error. That sort of play is good enough to get you through juniors, but wont cut it on the main tour. If you want to play like that, you have to be fit and athletic, which Murray is not.

murray gets far too much attention on this board in my opinion for an 18 year old yet to do anything of real note or substance
