Another predictable topsy-turvy match
Leo served at 42% in the first set and was broken three times to lose the set, winning 45% of service points. In the second set, both players struggled to hold their opening service games, with both saving break points. Falla struggled throughout most of the second set in holding, including at 5 all saving break points in a long deuce game where he had several game points before holding.
In the tiebreaker, Mayer had two mini-break leads which he lost, and Falla had MP at 7-*6 before Leo won three straight points to win the set.
Third set started with a break each as both dumped serve after long deuce games, Falla had several game points for *2-0 and didn't take any. There was a long break at 2-1 Mayer in the third set, and Falla got immediately broken to 30 after the break. There were several close service games but both held serve until Mayer served for the match at *5-3, a game he opened with a DF and lost to 15. Falla lost serve to love to lose the match.
Two mentally fragile players so this sort of match was very much not unexpected, almost 3 hours it took to complete. Glad Leo got the victory and his reward is playing Nadal in R2.
