Alright, every wta board has its Steffi/Monica or Steffi/Martina N arguement, and every atp board require an Agassi-Sampras debate

Its just the laws of the land, I don't make them, I just abide by them

So in their primes, who wins?

I suppose I should answer this myself...

Grass, Pete wins hands down. In 1999 when Agassi was perhaps in the best form of his life, he lost to Pete in three tight sets.

On harcourts of Clay, I pick Agassi. Clay is a given, and IMO he just edges out Pete on hard thanks to his better return of serve, and better groundstrokes.

Indoors, I,m not sure

I hadn't really considered the mental aspect - for both...

Agassi doesn't like to play Pete I suppose as much as if it was anyone not named Pete :p, and Pete uses 200% of his energy to whip Agassi as well as he can, because for some reason he had to put it all out for Agassi. hmmmm?

Agassi still takes him on clay, I don't change that.

Has Agassi won any slam more times than Sampras? (Except the French)?

You should know this: Aus Open

But the initial question: Sampras.

Yes, to elaborate on what christina pointed out, Agassi has won Aus 3 or 4 times?

And Sampras won it twice.

The Lawn Lizard wins on grass, hands-down, everytime.

Agassi wins on clay and rebound ace, hand-down, most times.

They are equal on carpet and hardcourts

but the Lizard has a mental edge in that he can lure Agassi into playing his game and that is always a mistake.

TTwarrior, yes he did.

But what is your point?

We're talking at their respective bests.

Of course everyone has thier bias on the issue -

most Agassi fans will lean towards him I imagine, or at lest try to, and Sampras fans for Pete..

Makes sense.

I'm rather in the middle.

Pete overall accomplished more, thanks to Wimbledon and all those years at number one, but Agassi underachieved for a few years, so I am not judging them strictly on what they have achieved :)

Becca:
as an Agassi fan i conceded that Pete had the mental edge over Agassi. not all of us are blinded by fanship. (is that a word?) i truly try to be objective. so altho' i can't stand Pete  i will always concede that he has a mental advantage over Agassi. i have no use for discussions where all people do is sing the praises of their faves. what's the point of the discussion then? heck we could all just start a bunch of cheering threads!
