Four Swedes through to the qualifying round
With six of the eight second round qualifying matches completed, we already have four Swedes through to the qualifying round. These are Joachim Johansson, Andreas Vinciguerra, Johan Settergren and Magnus Larsson.
Joachim Johansson was first up on center court and continued the great form that he showed yesterday. Finland's Kim Tiilikainen, a solid baseliner , won the first set 6-3 but then found himself being outplayed by Johansson's big guns. "PimPim" will now face Edwin Kempes, who ousted Jonas Fröberg in a late Sunday match.
Andreas Vinciguerra was next up against Daniel Andersson. In their first meeting ever, "Vinci" was using his big forehand to win comfortably by 6-1, 6-3. He will now battle it out with Johan Settergren for a place in the main draw. Settergren won a close contest against well-known Wayne Black, coming back from one set down to win 7-6 in the decider.
On center court, Magnus Larsson and Nicklas Timfjord faced each other for the second time in their careers. Just like in Båstad five years ago, Larsson won in two straight sets. Larsson has one hurdle left on his way to the main draw - Dutch player John van Lottum. Van Lottum has looked sharp so far with two straight set wins against Prpic yesterday and Bartlomiej Dabrowski today.
In today's only other non-Swedish battle, Slovakian Davis Cup player Karol Beck won against Peter Wessels. He will now play Pierre Berntsson, who won an all Swedish encounter against Henrik Andersson in straight sets.
The main draw starts tomorrow with some big names in action. The number three seed Guillermo Canas is up against Andre Sa at approximately 4:00 PM. That match is followed by an interesting first round match-up between last year's finalist Jarkko Nieminen and Todd Martin, a champion in Stockholm four years ago. The last match of the day on center court, not before 8:30 PM, will be a doubles match being played between World number one Lleyton Hewitt pairing up with Sweden's Joachim Johansson against the doubles specialists Jeff Coetzee and Chris Haggard. On court number one, Chile's Marcelo Rios will also be in doubles action together with Juan Ignacio Chela. They have a tough draw as they will face Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett. Other interesting top players on court number one tomorrow are Tommy Robredo and Paradorn Srichaphan.
