I think he would have won the following

1) AO 2005
2) wimbledon 2008
3) AO 2009
4) USO 2009
5) USO 2011

so 21 in total.

Well replace Nadal with someone you think has tremendous mental toughness.

for me, the mental toughness of nadal is a little overrated.

i mean , with federer , nadal had the mental advantage that in federer`s prime the most part of the matches were in clay and when nadal started to won outside clay federer wasn`t in his peak.

and other factor is that the gamestyle of nadal is perfect to defeat federer`s tennis , is the perfect weapon to defeat roger.

but this year, we can see that when nadal lost many times with one guy(nole) , his tennis start to low and he lost with mugs , he looks depresed and satured after suffer that painful losses.

federer suffered many painful losses with nadal and roger keep winning and motivated for more glory.

maybe nadal has mental toughness when he win all but when he lost and need to recove, fails much more than federer!

2,3,4 certainly. 1 and 5 is pretty speculative. 2011 and 2006 rg much more likely.
but yeah, what if, what if.

its staggering that the guy has enough steam to be both the achievement AND the choke GOAT.

If you take the mental toughness of Nadal in Federer, federer wont be the Federer we know and admire. He would be hitting fuckin Topspin back and forth. Hitting stupid Moonballs all across the courts. Behave like an animal on court and once the match is off act humbly while in the mind laughing on his opponents. No we dont want that Federer ever.

Leave that mental toughness to the talentless freak from Spain.

Well, without Nadal, Fed would have won like 7 more majors probably, so this doesn't that far fetched.

Sampras is probably mental toughness player ever, or atlest top3..
So replace with him.
with that terrible serve is easy has mental toughness:)

all the greats have good things and bad things:

sampras and Mcenroe were bads in clay, because they had one-dimensional game for fast courts.

borg never won slams in hc.

in the case of federer, his mental toughness is maybe the only weakness, he has a good mental toughness but not at the same level of sampras, borg or nadal.

but the perfect player don`t exist.

federer has the perfect game but not the perfect mentality

Mental toughness of Nadal, what's that????? Even Roger didn't lose 7 out of 10 finals in one year. Is that a most fearless competitor? Roger was outgunned by Nadal; Nadal was outgunned by Novak.

16 is what Roger deserves.

True. :) But Federer server ain't that bad either, but in cruial moments vs Nadal most of times it sux, because of mental toughness.. And yes, there is no perfect player, everyone are bad at something, that's tennis. :)

of course, that`s tennis.

when federer was more young his mental toughness was even worst!!!

federer improve very much his mental aspect, It was the typical case of the very talented player Capable of winning anyone and after to lose with anyone( like in wimbledon 2001 winning sampras and lost after that) , If federer had not improved his mental aspect maybe today it had been a case similar to a nalbandian or safin very much talent but Few titles chord to his great tennis.

federer was need more time to matured and improve his mental aspect , but thanks god he made that because if he not , today maybe He had not been the roger federer that we know

Federer should have won Wimbledon 2008 and AO 2009 as for slams, and Hamburg 2008.
However, every player is mentally tough at his prime, both Roger and Rafa were chokers during slumps/decline.

Just one of these nadal fans coming out with this... Turn the question round and I ask 'how many slams would nadal have of won if he had the tennis ability of Federer?' I'll tell you now that Nadal will NOT come near to getting as many as RF has. Nadal will be very very lucky to get 3 more, and even then thats at a big push and they will likely be french open clay if he can turn the tide on his deminishing ability.

maybe a few more but Federer has a pretty solid mentality, he doesn't really get down on himself or even THINK that he is going to lose. I think what you are mistaking for bad mentality is him losing to other players who get passionate and start playing amazing tennis on the latter half of matches.... do recall though, at the point when you have broken most tennis records you lose interest a bit, or passion, and it's not that your mentality is necessarily weaker as much as that you just don't care as much. why would you? you've won everything

Federer is a high-risk player, Nadal isn't. Of course the former's more prone to a choke than the 'safe' play of the latter, so the latter's 'mental toughness' is a touch overrated.
