World number one Lleyton Hewitt has pulled out of next week's Madrid Masters, the Australian's management team said on Friday.
Hewitt, who arrived in Europe last weekend in anticipation of playing in the final two ATP Masters Series events, has been suffering the effects of a viral infection.
"This is strictly a case of Lleyton following doctor's orders," said his agent Tom Ross.
"Hopefully, with sufficient rest and recovery, he will be able to compete in Paris in two weeks' time and be prepared to defend his title at The Masters Cup in Shanghai next month."
