What does Lleyton have to do to beat Roger? That is, what improvements can he make in his game?

Good for him to say so.
I don't know if he has a real chance but judging from the many comments in this forum, in the press, in other message boards...the other guys might as well hand over the USO 2005 title to Federer right away.

The first step is to try and be mentally prepared and believe in yourself and that's what Hewitt is doing, I guess.

Just like in the Tour de France when Lance was dominating. Pfff...the other guys didn't even try most of the time. They all had this "why bother, we can't attack him" attitude.
Lance was the king of them all, but I would have liked to have seen more cyclists with an "I'm going to beat this guy or die trying" attitude.
He needs to vary more, to attack more. He's too conservative and they know each other very well. For example Roddcik's attempts, though a bit wild, to come to the net, will pay off against Roger if he remains calm. Hewitt must take risks as well and try to make him crazy. He wont'overpower him like a Safin or a Nadal, so he must surprise him...
I agree that players need to have that element of surprise to get Roger out of his balance. Hewitt needs to develop another part of his game (his volleys maybe?) I noticed that his good at volleying when he executes them.

Roger knows Lleyton's game inside out and he definatelly needs to "develop" a new weapon.
"I can walk away and know that there was a couple of points, a breakpoint in the first set and he hit the edge of the line. A couple of inches, and I'm serving to go up 5-2 in the first. "

This is true about many matches, but its funny how hewitt --who lost the set 6-4-- only sees that it was a few inches away from serving for 5-2

It's good he has this positive attitude on a match he lost, but some part of this is just denial. hewitt was not playing well enough to win and he should just acknowledge that

I don't think Hewitt can change his game at this point, but he could try to stay completely focused during the matches. I think he tried to change his game facing Roddick in Cincinnati and that didn't work. He wasn't focused and he tried to end the points too quickly.

The big thing for Hewitt will be to hope for the best draw possible. If he's in the lower half he wouldn't have face Federer until the final. Also of course, he will hope that Federer gets very tough early rounds.

and hope for the best draw possible.

When did Nadal overpower Federer?
he cant beat federer but can beat everyone else on the tour, if hes on the other side of the draw i except him to get to the final, and win it if federer doesnt get that far

Nadal doesn't over power any one he just keeps on getting every ball back. Where does the notion that Nadal is a power hitter come from?
Hewitt doesnt really have the game to beat Federer when Roger is playing well. He jsut needs to stay solid and hope Roger goes off the boil, like what happened in the past when Hewitt has been able to take sets. But Roger rarely loses concentration in latter stages now, which is when they'll be playing.

If his FH is not powerful, WITH spin, then I don't know what is honestly, and he makes so much damage on many players game that I call it "overpower". How do you call it, Mickey Mouse top spin ?

Nadal can dictate points and overpower anyone with his forehand. He also happens to be a great retriever too.

Thanks. Exactly, Nadal=Overpower+retriever+cheese digger

 diggin the cheese!

Hewitt's going to need lots and lots of luck to win this one, there's so much tough competition. Being ready mentally is the first step, and the rest is gonna have to be luck.

Good luck, rusty!

#1 Cheese digger is Nadal! :D
Good luck in NY rocky
One really big disadvantage that I noticed about Lleyton´s game is his weak first serve percentage. He really needs to get more first serves in. Sometimes he serves under 50%. I don´t think that it would make such a big difference in a match against Roger, but it would help him in general if he would improve in that area.
He needs to attack the Fed serve especially second serves.
I'm tired of hewitt and his constant "I didn't take my chances...or he played the big points better". He says the same crap when he gets bagelled. Anyway this year I don't think he's in very good form at all, I see him getting knocked out by the quarters.
