Rafter, Stich, Sabatini...nominated

NEW YORK (AP) -- Patrick Rafter, Gabriela Sabatini and Michael Stich are among seven nominees for induction next year into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

''This year's ballot is truly international,'' Tony Trabert, president of the Hall of Fame and chairman of the Enshrinee Nominating Committee, said Friday. ''Individuals from Australia, Argentina, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Italy and Japan are named here. Our great sport reaches to the four corners of the world.''

Rafter, Sabatini and Stich were nominated in the Hall of Fame's Recent Player category. Sven Davidson and Christine Truman Janes were nominated in the Master Player category, while Gianni Clerici of Italy and Eiichi Kawatei of Japan were nominated as Contributors to the sport.

A panel of international tennis media will vote on the Recent Player nominees, with a 75 percent favorable vote required for induction. The International Masters Panel, consisting of Hall of Fame inductees and others highly knowledgeable of the sport and its history, vote on the Master Player and Contributor nominees.

The 2006 induction class will be announced after the first of the year. The induction ceremony will be held July 15 in Newport, R.I.

The ITHF has inducted 190 people representing 18 countries since its establishment in 1954.

Good that they acknowledged Stich's great allround ability, his success on all surfaces and his talent by at least nominating him allthough he only one Slam, he doesn't have too many Masters and he also was not biggest title collector in his career.
