Tommy Haas will miss the Australian Open because of a shoulder injury.
The German was a beaten semi-finalist in last year's tournament, the opening Grand Slam of the season.
But his agent revealed the world number 11 had damaged his shoulder while training in Florida and had since seen a specialist in New York.
He will undergo surgery on Thursday.
Tony Godsick, the player's agent, said: "Tommy is very disappointed.
"He was looking forward to starting the year off in Melbourne but is optimistic that he will be back on the court soon. He will start rehab in Florida as soon as he can."

Poor Tommy

not another player with a shoulder injury

He's gonna take a pretty bad fall in ranks too
