Of the eight men competing next week at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, Carlos Moya had to make perhaps the largest last-minute push to reach the season-ending championship.

Moya entered last week's BNP Paribas Masters sitting in the 8th position in the ATP Champions Race - one spot away from a guaranteed seat in Shanghai. However, with six positions still up for grabs, it was a sure thing that the Spaniard would have to be playing into the weekend in Paris if he wanted a shot at the Masters Cup.

After dodging two tough opponents in American James Blake and defending Paris champion Sebastien Grosjean, Moya sat facing one more towering obstacle - Andre Agassi. The same Agassi who was in a battle to move closer to the Race lead currently held by Lleyton Hewitt and the same Agassi who has a shot at finishing the year as the World No. 1.

But Moya had already been given much hope prior to taking the court with the veteran American. Losses by Jiri Novak and Tim Henman meant that Moya could book his airline ticket to China if he defeated Agassi.

With the confidence of 50 plus wins in 2002 and four titles under his belt, Moya marched onto the Paris court and pulled off the rare straight sets victory against Agassi and qualified to play in the ATP's final tournament of the year.

In 2002, Moya - who held the No. 1 ranking during a stretch in 1999 - returned to the top-notch tennis that took him to the top of the ATP rankings. While winning three tournaments in a two month stretch during the hard court season, Moya said he was playing the best tennis of his life - even better than his 1998 Roland Garros title run.

In Shanghai, Moya will have to unleash his in-form tennis in order to win the title. Already paired with Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and Albert Costa in round robin play, Moya will indeed have three finals-caliber matches before the semifinals even begin.

However, Moya has already scored wins this year against Hewitt, Agassi, Safin and Ferrero. Stay tune!

Mighty Moya Slays Safin

Carlos Moya is the Miracle Man. Despite winning four ATP singles titles in 2002, his chance to qualify for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai hinged on his performance at the final tournament of the regular season, the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.



Had he not saved six match points against Sebastien Grosjean in the third round, then had he not defeated the mighty Andre Agassi in the quarterfinals, Moya would be cooling his heels on a Mallorca beach this week.

Marat Safin (pictured above) is one who would rather see Moya beachside than courtside after suffering a 6-4, 7-5 loss in the opening match of the Tennis Masters Cup Tuesday. Safin had been considered one of the favorites for the title, given his victory in Paris less than two weeks ago.

But Moya, who reached the final of the ATP World Championships in 1998, had the Russian's measure and now has a strong chance of winning through the Red Group to reach the semifinals.


What Moya said:

"I think the court was different, the tournament is different. In that tournament [Paris], he won three matches already, then he played me, so I think it is better to play Marat the first day. But still I think today I have been able to return his serve very well and I put him under a lot of pressure, so I think that was the difference.

"I thought it was very important to take the first set and then I thought the match was over when I broke his serve at 4-all. I was serving 5-4, and he played a great game there and I was lucky to break him back right after he broke my serve. So when I had 6-5, I realized that I could not miss that second chance, so I had to take it.

"I had some problems with my back, but it was not that bad. I had to take care of it and take
treatment."
