Adri, thanks for the translations.

Lets say I would very pissed off Gaston didn't play Buenos Aires if it wasn't injury-related.

Rosie, you have a good point!
Now, I stop planning a trip to BsAs but stay here in the Netherlands.
Rotterdam is a very good tournament. Full of audience even early in
the week - "No less than 104,739 fans visited" the tournament in 2004.
The practice courts are open for public (at least in 2004).
I really hope Gaston will be there.....
I have never been to the Rotterdam tournament before although I know the city fairly well..........but if David keeps his word and plays there I will definately be there in 2005 - and also Marseilles :) Maybe I'll see you there :wavey:

Re: Gaston News & Articles

Here is a nice article about the Davis Cup, The link is:-

http://www.ole.clarin.com/jsp/v3/pa...sp?pagId=891846

Sorry I am really frantic at work today and don't have time to translate, but basically it confirms what we thought earlier, with Gaston, David, Guillermo Canas and Coria being in the team for the 1st round DC tie with David and Canas as the possible doubles team. In the 2nd round against Australia, David and Canas would be the singles players. If some kind person wants to come over here and help me deal with a stream of unpleasant, abusive (and mostly drunk!) claimants wanting money for Christmas  I will gladly translate - if not - perhaps someone else can do it!!!

Re: Gaston News & Articles

All together will make it
The country house in Nordelta, a little city inside Tigre in constant development, was the scenary. A quiet zone, an ideal night: almost 20°C, not too cold, not too hot. The clasic asado couldn't be missing. Taking advantage of the preseason and in strict secret, yesterday was made, the much needed gathering between the players and the captain, Alberto Mancini, to check the schedules, unify thoughts and discuss things related to the Davis Cup, so it will be a priority in 2005.
The gathering was full: except the national N°1, Guillermo Coria, absent (he gathered with Luli during his staying in Argentina, almost a month ago, and promised that "you can count on me even if I'm not among the chosen players), there were the top 100 and even more, from David Nalbandian and Gastón Gaudio till Mariano Puerta. Among the doubles players, there weren't missing Gastón Etlis, Lucas Arnold and Mariano Hood. Mancini had told Olé in October, knowing that Czech Republic would be the first round rival, that he thought to get together the kids. "My dream is that Argentina will be like France or Spain", he wished.
This gathering didn't have any past reference in the brief history of our national tennis and it was an example, to put together positions, given the characteristic individualism of this sport, to avoid confusions and misunderstandings. The good relationship between Mancini and the players was the key: they chose him, with Martín Jaite, as a captain, because of the unhappiness of some with Gustavo Luza. "If we put him, we should accept any decision", had said Juan Ignacio Chela in a recent interview. In the possibles determinations from Mancini that won't leave everybody happy, is the idea of rotating the team, taking notice of the different surfaces and the offer of players. For example, if he prefers Gaudio over Nalbandian in the singles against the Czechs (this newspaper already said that Luli's inicial idea is to build the first team with Coria, Nalbandian, Gaudio and Cañas), and then go to the Australian grass without calling Gaudio and calls Cañas for the singles. The teams will be confirming in 2005. Last night, the important thing was that a much bigger team got together.

That's good news! Thanks for posting it. I hope they do well. That would be a great thing for all of the players.
Rosie- your kitties are so cute, definately stars! I'll help you with those drunken people. I deal with idiots all day. I try to ignore them as much as possible. I love when people call and rant and rave over the phone- then I like to tell them that we have a bad connection and to call back. They hate that *LOL*. Good- jerks shouldn't be calling here anyway. Hope the day goes by quickly if it can't be a pleasant one.

Hope everyone is ready for the Holiday coming up. No last minute shopping!

Jaite's interview:
–With 4 tennis players among the first 11 in the world, what's your balance of 2004?
–It was a very good year and weird at the same time, for the number of injured players. You have to notice that Coria and Nalbandian played very little. I highlight above all Gastón Gaudio's triumph in Roland Garros and the great second part of the year of Guillermo Cañas.
–Can this growth go on?
-I think we can wait hope for a very good year in 2005. And I think there can be a bigger growth, especially from Coria and Nalbandian, and a progress from Juan Monaco.
–From the Argentinians, who do you think has the best possibilities of being N°1?
- If Nalbandian plays all year, is the player that best adapts to different surfaces. And like that he can be N°1.
–Why in the last Masters the Argentinian couldn't win even a set?-It's very hard to make it to the Masters, you have to evaluate that Coria wasn't at his best physical conditions and Gaudio wasn't playing on his favourite surface.

COPA DAVIS 2005

Re: Gaston News & Articles

Hi guys!
I don't know if you already know this, but Gastón won the silver Olimpia yesterday, beating Paola Suarez and Guillermo Coria. Vilas was the one handing in the award, and Gastón was very happy. You could see him signing lots of autographs. It was very funny to see him in a suit, but with sneakers on lol! Does he want to imitate Roddick? I hope not! Vilas recieved an award for having won the gold Olimpia three times, and Gaby Sabatini was there too for winning the Gold twice.
Unfourtunatly Gastón didn't win the gold, Ginobili and Tevez won it this year.

Re: Gaston News & Articles

I posted this in the gastongaudioclub, so if any of you read it there, forgive me!

Gaston received the Silver Olimpia Award in Tennis last night! Vilas gave him the statuette. (It’s unfortunate that for Gaudio to win Paola Suarez had to loose…). The prizes, which are very prestigious here, were awarded during a banquet held at the Buenos Aires Hilton, a sort of Oscar ceremony. He was also being considered for the Gold Olimpia to the best sportsman of the year, but it went to Ginobili and Teves as the best players of the basketball and football Olympic Gold Medallist teams.
Last Friday Gaston was awarded the Clarin prize in tennis, also handed to him by Vilas, and he in his turn gave the prize of sports Revelation of the Year to Monaco.
I would like to share with you my feelings of happiness at this wonderful end of the year for Gaston. To have won the Argentine cup was really important to make him the Argentine public’s idol again, after the DC fiasco. He was undoubtedly the hero of the tournament, with Vilas, Maradona and Batistuta going to watch him play, with all the things that Maradona said of him, and the public cheering him on as in the old days. Now receiving the Olimpia was the final acclaim, to confirm that he is firmly installed as one of the most important and recognized sports figures of Argentina. But all this is made special because of the sort of person Gaston is. I was watching him last night, standing beside Vilas, with the look of inner peace good people have, seeming younger than ever, gentle and vulnerable, unspoilt, and my heart went out to him, hoping life will continue to be kind to him and look after him as a protected species.
There are constant reminders of the sort of person he is: When he beat David, he hardly celebrated, as I think he had totally identified himself with David’s feelings about his father. His words over the microphone were “I want to say that we must really value David’s having come after what happened to him. I want us all to applaud him a lot”. He only seemed to celebrate when he started fooling around with the Peugeot 307 he’d won. When he played in Tandil, he had a flock of kids cheering him on, and he seemed to be playing more for them than for himself. When Zabaleta’s strong service rebounded and hit a little girl in the face, Gaston ran over and tried to comfort her for a long time, finally taking off his cap and giving it to her to console her. According to a friend in the gastongaudio_group, after his match against Calleri in the Copa Argentina he gave a tennis clinic for kids, and stayed on to play with handicapped children. He said that he carried a little Down boy in his arms, hugging and kissing him, and the child’s expression was out of this world.

Never change, Gaston!

I found out kinda late that the Olimpia awards were being broadcasted on the Internet (through America, the same channel where Mariano's show is!). I only caught the last award, the Olimpia de Oro. But I'm so glad Gastón won his award

And Vale, I agree completely with your post :)!

Yeah me too agrees with Vale. Gaston will always always be appreciated for the kind of person he is, for being a great sportsman & a great human in one, he deserves a recognition like this one, and more. And the people who really recognize him seem to be his fans, not the journalists, not the media, but us. I hope he'll always stay this way, forevers!:) Gaston, you rock!!!

Re: Gaston News & Articles

This is for all the English-speaking fans, and friends - I sometimes post the same message in the gastongaudioclub, so please bear with me if you've read it there...

Re-capping at the end of the year, I just wanted to comment a few things:

DC: I saw a TV interview with Mancini, the day after the meeting with the players. The interviewer asked him if Gaudio would be playing in the DC, and the reply (quoting from memory) was that he´d been great in RG, then due to personal problems he´d participated little and had not played well, but that now he was at a very good level. In conclusion, wait and see...

DC: Have you noticed that it´s been Gaston who’s always insisted “if all of us players get together, we have to be able to win the Davis Cup” ? It’s exactly what Mancini intends to do, to have a large team and call each one as the situation presents itself.

GG on hard: I’m not an expert, but I thought he played some marvellous points against David. He’s got that great style learnt on clay, speeded-up for hard. It was a pleasure to watch, and he was very fast. No more ambling walk between points, and he seemed focussed and determined.

Foot-faults: He said “ They’re my little children. I think I’ll never be able to give them up” !

Service: It seemed to improve as the game against David wore on, specially the second serve, which was more difficult to return.

VIP fans: Surely it must make him feel great to have Maradona as a fan, and to have Vilas sponsoring him for all the prizes. Batistuta says he “hopes to be able to play better tennis now that he’s got Gaudio’s racquet”, and De Vicenzo (ex champion golfer) says “ Gaudio is a very intelligent boy”. At the Olimpia awards he was very sought after for autographs.

Dark suit with tennis shoes: Was it a small demonstration of rebeldry, or a new fashion statement? Or did he just forget to take dress shoes??

This is a good moment to wish all you friends in the forum a special Christmas and may you have a very happy new year. May your wishes come true, and if they don’t, let it be for the best, as it often is! And for Gaston, a wonderful 2005, with luck, happiness and good health for all the family.

Thanks, Vale! :worship: Believe it or not, I have been wondering all day long today who had said that - I remember it was a golfer but further I was just clueless. Now I may have a good night....
