Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

I saw an interview with Gastón on ESPN after he lost to Müller. He was sad and depressed, and he´s unable to understand what is happening to him, after his long rest and intensive preparation.

DPA News Agency sent an article to all the media where it quotes the salient points of the interview. Here´s a translation:

“I didn´t play well, in fact I played pretty badly”

“I couldn´t get into the game, the court was very fast. I lost, and it´s over”.

“I see everything passing me at 3000 km per hour and I´m in slow motion”. (This he said while on court!!!)

“It´s been like this for a long time, I´ve been saying it for a year.
I don´t know what the cause is, I just don´t know, I´m not in there, my tennis doesn´t work and I don´t know why”.

- Can you find something positive in all this?

“Something positive? That I´m going home”.

The 2004 Roland Garros champion had a similar experience at the beginning of the year in which he won in Paris. “I hope my confidence will return; may it happen as soon as possible”.

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

So BUMMED:sad: that Gaston is not beginning 2007 well. The heartbreaking photo is breaking my heart. I saw something about Franco as a former trainer? Is Davin out of the picture? And, Lotto instead of Diadora? No comparison.

I have an idea-- I WANT to see Gaston at the 2008 Olympics so badly; he should have been there in 2004 when the Chileans took the medals.

If Davin is out of the picture; If Andy Roddick can have Jimmy Connors; why can't Gaston have Guillermo Vilas? THAT would turn some heads. It's not like Vilas isn't at all the matches ANYWAY.

I do know that Gaudio respects Vilas tremendously. All Gaston is missing is KNOWING that he can win. He can do it; now, he has to BELIEVE it. Want it badly enough.

This could be in the works as we speak (Vilas and Gaston). I think it may be just what Gaston needs someone to remind him to BELIEVE IN HIMSELF, who better than Guillermo Vilas?

I don't take kindly to speculation, so where are the facts that state Franco and Gaston have split up?

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

From the Costa Do Sauipe tournament site:

Web-translated:
Gaudio: "I am playing the worst tennis of my life" 11/02/2007 - 18h10

Coast of Sauípe (Bahia) - In contrast to the optimism declared by Spanish Carlos Moyá, the Argentine Gastón Gaudio, winner of the French Open in 2004, fights to surpass the bad phase and to play again the tennis that him among the top 5 in the world in 2005.

"My expectation in this tournament they are those of to play possible the best and to win a couple of matches. I come playing the worst tennis of my life and I should revert this bad phase. Lately I have not won a single match", indicated al I finish of the training that did not leave it in agreement.

Gaudio faces in the first round the Italian Potito Starace, and esteem that will not have an easy task:

"Starace is playing very well. It is a player that moves well and that fights to the end. Itself that be nothing easy, but if I want to leave the pit, better nothing than a triumph against a large one", expressed.

Gaudio also praised the tournament al that considers of an excellent technical level: "To alternate with large as Ferrero, Moyá, Guga and other is always good. To them the respect a lot by its path. All they did history in the tennis", concluded.

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

this is an article from today in La Nación after he lost in first round in Brazil

the title said: "Gaudio, come back"
i have no time to translate it, maybe Vale could do it :)

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/visual.asp?tema_id=102&nota_id=883549

A veces me da vergüenza.

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

This will be much better for Vale to translate and clean this article up, but I will give a basic summary. This is not 100 percent accurate, just trying to make a machine translation readable.

Summary:

"I want to be back in the top 10, winning tournaments like I had done in 2004 and 2005. I lack the dedication to be at 100% mentally and play like that before."

This phrase is attributed to Gaston Gaudio at the end of last year in an interview with La Nacion, when he was doing his season's preparation that began last month. 2007 has begun worse for the last legion (Argentine players) winner of Roland Garros.

The tennis player from Temperley has reached a crossroad, since he lost the last 4 matches last year and in total six successive 1st round losses. His last official victory was against American Sam Querrey in the second round of the US Open last year.

The Davis Cup

"I want to win the Davis Cup. I would like to be part of the team again, but first I have to play well again. I lack confidence to win matches to be in the team. If I play well, then I am sure to have possibilities, it does not depend on the captain, but I have to help so that they put me in the team again". Meaning he has to play at his best, so Mancini has no choice but to select him.

Ferocious self-criticisms

It's what one sees at that moment in time. I am 100% authentic, what you see is what you get. Yes, I am very self-demanding and times it goes against me and it's an area that I have to improve. At times I am ashamed of myself, but it is what it is. And I understand myself, because are there moments, that it's best to get it over and done with.

What comes next

Next week, he will play the Copa Telmex that will be played in the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. In that tournament he won the title in 2005, when defeated to Mariano Door (Puerta) in the finals In semifinals defeated to Rafael Nadal, who then achieved a run of 60 consecutive victories on clay.

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

Maria and George, thanks for the article/translation.

Another article in the official site: Gaudio: "Me siento el pior jugador de la historia del tenis"

WillyCañas translated what Gaston said in the article ( GM thread):

"The truth is that I don't find an explanation to what is happening to me. I think it is a sum up of everything, psycological, physical, of will.
Sincerely I don't know and I think I don't even deserve that you make me an interview. At this moment I feel like the worse player in the history of tennis".
(Thanks for the translation - hope she/he doesn't mind being quoted.)

I read somewhere that Gaston was seen travelling with Franco and Marcela - so at least Franco is there by Gaston's side - not to mention Marcela.

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

I´ve been away a few days, far from the news, and now I´m feeling pretty down reading just how bad Gastón is feeling. He´s given no interviews except those two in Brazil quoted here. The La Nación article is just a rehash of old articles already translated, and GWH transcribed the gist of it pretty accurately.
Luckily both Franco and Marcela are still supporting Gastón, but he must be in a black mood. I only hope the BA ATP will be the occasion when he starts to play better!

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

Gastón gave a short interview by phone to Clarín. He sounds better!:)
Here are the main parts of the article:

http://www.clarin.com/diario/2007/02/17/deportes/d-07701.htm

"I LIKE TO PLAY VERY GOOD TENNIS AND LATELY I HAVEN´T BEEN ABLE TO ENJOY MYSELF"

In the heat of the moment the ex Roland Garros champion had said: "I feel I´m the worst player in history". He wants to regain his level in Buenos aires.

Marcelo Maller
[email protected]

Yesterday he told Clarín "I have no idea why this is happening to me. But I always say this is like a wheel: sometimes you´re up and others you´re down. I hope I can come around".

In a calm mood the Gato talks with this paper on the phone and is already thinking about about what may happen this coming week in his next challenge: the Buenos Aires ATP, a tournament which he won in 2005.

"Considering how I´ve been playing lately, I won´t feel any pressure. I know that the public will help me".

"To win any match is the best way to overcome this stage. I have to overcome this".

- What do you need to overcome this moment?

"To have fun, enjoy myself. Because I like to play very good tennis and lately I haven´t enjoyed myself".

- And how will you enjoy yourself?

"I have faith that I´ll recover. But I think I´ll overcome this with perseverance and patience. I want to play well again, to have fun, to have a good time on court".

Regarding Argentina´s recent triumph in the Davis Cup:
"What´s happened is very good, and Del Potro played very well. It was a difficult situation for him, as it was his debut, playing away. He has a promising future".

About playing the DC:
"It´s one of the objectives I would like to fulfil and that´s still pending. Because when one is little one dreams of winning Roland Garros, of being a top ten and number one in the world - which for me is impossible - and winning the Davis Cup".

- Are you the worst player in history?

"I said that in the heat of the moment, I´d played a bad match and I was just off the court".

Re: Gaston News, Information & Articles

Gastón will play on Wednesday, probably in the evening.

He had said "I know that the public will help me", and it´s already happening: According to La Nación, on Saturday 1500 people ended up watching him and Massú practice (Massú later dropped out due to injury) and today´s Clarín says that on Sunday he alone filled the No. 3 court with fans watching him practice. The crowd was constantly calling out "Vamos Gato" and cheering him on!:)

Of course I mind, I spent 20 days of my life translating that paragraph...

By the way, I am a he. And that should never be in doubt. Having a little bird in my avatar doesn't make me less of a man.

I'm so glad to read that! I'm sure the public will help him and it's so good to know he's convinced by that :)

Di Mauro just won, so he's the third player in Gaston's group.
Good luck to Gaston for wednesday  :bounce:
