It is clear that in a parallel and more perfect universe Gasquet is the reigning number one in tennis, with 15 grandslams - two shy of the record held by Jonas Bjorkman. And he is only 21. But since technologies haven't yet been developed to have a peek at this spectacle, we are concerned with our world and why this Gasquet is having an exceptionally poor year in 2008.
The answer is almost immediate. Looking back at my unveiling of a conspiracy against Gasquet here,

we can come to the conclusion that Gasquet, the brilliant man that he is, was completely aware of such a possibility. So he's decided to take it easy for 2008, and is currently softening up the tour by losing to suckers like Tursunov, Andreev, Tsonga and Blake.
Extremely well planned PR strategies of including a hippie (Noah) as a consultant and an April Fool's joke about McEnroe's involvement were all calculated to give the impression to the tour and to the fans that Gasquet is on the decline.
Come 2009, Gasquet will use the Sydney international as a practice session and will unveil his tenacity, charm and his backhand on the tour and will become the bandwagon player of the next decade. Much like China's invasion of India, it will sudden and victory will be assured.
