Thiem pulled out all the stops in the end to win this one.

He got through, but he looked physically and mentally flat for a while, and quite gassed.

Thiem had BP to serve out another 6-4 set in the 3rd, he should have taken that, or hung on to the 12th game and eek out a tiebreak. He would have done well to maneouver through the first 4 rounds without losing a set against good opposition. Instead, he looked increasingly winded and tired afterwards, while Gaston grew bolder and stronger, continuing his in-the-zone play.

Let's see how much this took out of him.

Don't see him going through a Schwartzman-Nadal(probably)-Djokovic/Tsitsipas Gauntlet anymore.

As far as Gaston, what a talented, varied, creative, clever player he is. Cheeky good.

And great fighter, without annoying grunts or excessities.

Very similar to Moutet, funny as both are french.

Looks like there is ANOTHER NextGen to watch for.

German ES Commies on the money tonight: "Gaston in a complete zone/state of ecstatsy", "he must not even know what he's playing anymore"

Fun match. Thiem is gonna have his work cut out for him the rest of the way unless he raises it about 100 bars

The number of facepalms I made after Thiem's shots was higher than number of Gaston's dropshots. Thiem can be such a MUG sometimes it's incredible, lol

Gaston is such a rare breed, amazing player, wow.

Feels like Gaston damaged Thiem's brain with these drop shots.

All these technical and tactical improvements under Massu making Thiem stable went down the drain for Thiem with about 700th dropshot from Gaston. Gaston short-circuited him into a ballbashing rage quitter with hands from concrete for majority of third and fourth. Genuinely looked like amateur against Gaston at the net. Luckilly he snapped out of it a bit in the fifth with better serving and more patience with more precise FH.

Although physically (and often mentally) weak with questionable technique, French players have panache. Be it a great backhand, net approaches or drop shots, they are different from your standard player. They're great to watch here. And Gaston has been glorious in the last two matches, super talented and clever junk baller. Can take the ball super early, great defenceand drop shot GOATing. Santoro will be proud.

Completely flummoxed Thiem with his droppers

Time to rest for his match with bestie.

This kid can do a lot of different things on court. He has to figure out his strategy and he can go places. His lobs are Murray/Santoro level, and speaking of the magician maybe he should work with this kid.

Thiem was lost at times but good serving last set. He has to do a lot better to save Roger though.

Was a hell of a ride that. Respect to Hugo Gaston, came from nowhere and gave us a show in the first week.

Can't help feeling Dom getting sloppy and not getting it done in straight sets will cost him a shot at winning. We'll see next round as that could be another 3 hr + match.
