France produces successful tennis players, like Brazilians produces soccer players. And unlike Spain, France produces operational players not only for clay. Indeed, the French player is usually good enough for every surface. And of course, there are guys like Federer, Baghdatis, etc... So, a) why there is a gap between France and the rest of the World? and b) do you think it will get even bigger with time?

Spain was not far behind, unless you count GS titles, then French really excel ;)

Ex-Yu countries if put together are as successful with just one third of population and no colonies across the globe.

The only explanation I see is that tennis is successful in this places is because of the dissolution of Ex-Yu.

Because tennis is an expensive/elitist sport that isn't truly popular in other countries/most of the world. France got the money to support its' players since an early age, the population(many immigrants as well) and the tournaments to speed up their rise thru the rankings.

People forget that only 300 or so players turn a profit every year. Only the top100 can really make a living of tennis prizes. Most parents/kids give up at an early age.

It depends what France would prefer, a lot of general depth in the top 50/100, or less depth but a slam winner/champion player.

France hasn't produced a grand slam champion since 1983. How the hell can you compare yourself to Spain that has Nadal, Moya, Bruguera, Costa, Ferrero?! Furthermore, no weeks at no.1...your domination in tennis is akin to Britain's: drought in the Open era.

Croatia has 2 GS champions in the 21st century with a popuation of 4,5million.

Keep your Gasquets and Simons.

And I agree, Spain actually produces champions and legends of the sport. Switzerland has 2 amazing players. Serbia has Djokovic who is worth more than all of your player combined.

France has a great system so they will continue to produce a lot of good players and at some point they find another slam winner. They have the potential to dominate tennis.
