Imo, had he lost one of those two match points he's probably sitting on 2-4 slams right now (where Murray currently is). It would have been his fourth consecutive lost to Fed at USO, dropping him to 1-5 against Fed at majors and 0-4 against Nadal. That match gave him the confidence to beat the top players and turned his career around, starting in 2011. We have seen from time and time again how mental a game tennis is: Look at Nadal's current struggles or someone like Coria.
People can talk about gluten-free or decline of Fedal or his Davis Cup win and those played a role, but by far the most important was winning the match against Fed that year, especially saving the match points in the fashion he did.
