Nah, no fluke.

Albert was one of the best clay courters in the world before he even won there, so it was something that he earned :)

he had to beat 3 of last years semifinalists to win the title, 2 of them were last years finalists - one a three time winner, and the other a two time finalist.

So no fluke, just long overdue.

(I'm soooo over Juan Carlos losing now ;))

Vamos Costa :D

NO FLUKE! Look at the number of clay tourneys he won before he won RG. Tremendous amount. Somewhere towards 15 or something?

Definately not a fluke. Al had underachieved in his career prior to RG 2002, often being classed as a major contender at the French Open in the mid to late 90s, only to frequently fail to live up to his billing, so winning the French Open title meant that he made up for his past disappointments. It was indisputable that he was the best player during RG fortnight in 2002, as the standard of tennis that he produced was significantly higher than anyone else's. He outplayed Guga, Corretja and Ferrero, and thoroughly deserved to emerge triumphant. He also performed brilliantly to reach the semi-finals a year later in 2003, and of course there was no stopping Ferrero that year.
