Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

Welcome! :wavey:

Can someone give me a link to the sheet we are using this season so I can put it in the first post?

Also, we can discuss about any changes we have to make (even if I think it's not the case).

And, of course, any ideas you have, just shout :D

Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

Forgot this comment made by Mark on the other thread.

With that said, the FITD ranking system could maybe use some revamp, as it stands it is ridiculously biased to Slam winners; and I'm saying this as someone who's only ranked where I am right now because I won the US Open. A difference of one correct prediction at a Slam can orginate a 2k+ point swing. After Wimbledon, as an experiment I made some alternate rankings for if Federer had won the final, the difference is just huge; wfrw07, ranked #1 right now, would be outside the top 5 had Federer won that match.

IMO, in a game of this nature where you have different winners almost every week, giving such a huge weight to winning a Slam makes the top of the rankings a bit random - it's not like it takes much more, if at all, predicting skills to win a Slam than any other tournament but the point disparity is huge. The difference between 1st and 14th in a Slam might be 1 correct prediction but 1775 points, which takes basically two Masters title to make up for.
I guess it's worth looking into it. What do you think? What can we do?

Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

About the new rankings rule. I give your my thoughts according to Mark Lenders ideas:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it is time to talk about the rankings rule, as I think that it is vital in order to make this game more interesting. We have some weeks until the next season starts. The thing would be:

-> Making a proposal between Mark Lenders and me that will be completed let's say, in Monday to Wednesday of next week.
-> Vote that proposal between Monday-Wednesday (8th-10th of December) during two weeks (until 22-24th of December).

Basically, the problem is the following:

-> The actual ranking system overrates a lot a player that won a tournament and puts them ahead of the players that won maybe 1-2 more less tournaments but that got a better result in most of the tournaments during the year.
-> As Lenders mentioned before, the ranking system is biased towards Grand Slam champions. Lenders was spot on: "The difference between 1st and 14th in a Slam might be 1 correct prediction but 1775 points, which takes basically two Masters title to make up for.".
-> FITD is a game where we compete against everybody and where differences between standing leaders are very tight, so it doesn't fit to have huge point differences when draws are pretty similar.

The solution would be simple, as Lenders stated: make a new ranking system where points are dinamically given to players according to the number of guessed picks. The benefits would be:

-> Consistent pickers during the year would be the ones at the TOP since the game would bet fairer.
-> Differences at the TOP of the rankings would be thiner and the game will be more exciting.

In short: the points got in a tournament will depending in how well do you pick rather than in the position where you finish. That would be fair: with the original ranking system, a player that wins an ATP250 without guessing the winner has the same points than a player that in an ATP250 guessed the 80% of the draw, the two finalists and the winner. Ranking points now will depend on the number of points that your draw gets in a tournament, not in the ranking points assigned to the position where you finish in the Standings (but, for sure, the highest players in the Standings will get more points than the other players, but the gaps between the number of points will depend according to the draw differences, not to the Standings position differences).

Note that a winner of Roland Garros won't get as much points as the winner of Wimbledon: points will depend on how well you pick (but, in practice, both winners will have similar points, maybe one has 16 more/less than the other, etc.). It is fair for me, look at what happened in the last US OPEN: nobody predicted Nishikori and Cilic as finalists/winners and the FITD US OPEN 2014 champion got the same poins than a player that made almost a perfect draw in Roland Garros.

Lenders runs a similar game than FITD in a FB group. I took HIS ranking system and I made a very few changes.

New proposed ranking system for FITD:

4 Grand Slam count for the ranking
WTF points to be added (if qualified)
Best 8 of the 9 M1000 results count for the rankings
Best 10 results between ATP500 and ATP 250 will count as well

Victories by BYE's do not count as points.

Grand Slams: (448 points at stake - no BYE's given)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 2p
R3 - 4p
R4 - 8p
QF - 16p
SF - 32p
F - 64p

448 = 64*1 + 32*2 + 16*4 + 8*8 + 4*16 + 2*32 + 1*64

WTF: (320 points at stake - no BYE's given)

RR - 16p per match
SF - 32p
F - 64p

320 = 12*16 + 2*32 + 1*64

128-draw M1000: (224 points at stake - 32 BYE's in 1st Round)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 1p
R3 - 2p
R4 - 4p
QF - 8p
SF - 16p
F - 32p

224 = 32*1 + 32*1 + 16*2 + 8*4 + 4*8 + 2*16 + 1*32

64-draw M1000: (184 points at stake - 8 BYE's in 1st Round)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 2p
R3 - 4p
QF - 8p
SF - 16p
F - 32p

184 = 24*1 + 16*2 + 8*4 + 4*8 + 2*16 + 1*32

64-draw ATP500: (136/128 points at stake - 8/16 BYE's in 1st Round)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 2p
R3 - 4p
QF - 4p
SF - 8p
F - 16p

136 = 24*1 + 16*2 + 8*4 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16
128 = 16*1 + 16*2 + 8*4 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16

32-draw ATP500: (112 points at stake - no BYE's given)

R1 - 2p
R2 - 4p
QF - 4p
SF - 8p
F - 16p

128 = 16*2 + 8*4 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16

64-draw ATP250: (96 points at stake - 16 BYE's in 1st Round and only Winston Salem and Nottingham)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 1p
R3- 2p
QF - 4p
SF - 8p
F - 16p

96 = 16*1 + 16*1 + 8*2 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16

32-draw ATP250: (80/76 points at stake - NO/4 BYE's in 1st Round)

R1 - 1p
R2 - 2p
QF - 4p
SF - 8p
F - 16p

80 = 16*1 + 8*2 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16
76 = 12*1 + 8*2 + 4*4 + 2*8 + 1*16

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, if you think that, in addition of the system that I mentioned before, there has to be a bonus for winning a tournament (or being at the top of the Standings) rather than only giving the points according to the guessed picks, then we can agree the following bonus to add to the points that you get with the ranking system that I stated before:

Grand Slam bonus:

1st - 180p
2nd - 160p
3rd - 140p
4th - 120p
5th - 110p
6th - 100p
7th - 90p
8th - 80p
9th - 75p
10th - 70p
11st - 65p
12nd - 60p
13rd - 55p
14th - 50p
15th - 45p
16th - 40p
17th - 38p
18th - 36p
19th - 34p
20th - 32p
21st - 30p
22nd - 28p
23rd - 26p
24th - 24p
25th - 22p
26th - 20p
27th - 18p
28th - 16p
29th - 14p
30th - 12p
31st - 10p
32nd - 8p
Worse - 0p

WTF bonus:

1st - 90p
2nd - 80p
3rd - 70p
4th - 60p
5th - 55p
6th - 50p
7th - 45p
8th - 40p
9th - 35p
10th - 30p
11st - 25p
12nd - 20p
13rd - 15p
14th - 10p
15th - 5p
16th - 0p

And that trend can be followed with M1000 of 64/32-draw size, ATP500 of 64/32-draw size and ATP250 of 64/32-draw size.

Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

To sum up - we have all this four options. If FITD Board agrees, we could open a thread where let the users vote between the following four options:

Philosophy of giving ranking points only based in position in the Final Standings

1) Original ranking system
2) A modification of the original ranking with a better scaled points distribution
This ranking system would consist in, for example, not giving 2000p to a GS champion and 1200p to the 2nd like in the original ranking system but maybe 2000p to the champion and 1800p to the 2nd, and so on with the rest of the rankings. Less diferences of points won between players in the Standings to make the game fairer since FITD is not a game with rounds like Tennis Tipping or real tennis

Philosophy of giving ranking points only based in guesses in the draw

3) System that I mentioned before in the last post without bonus that I mentioned in the last post

Hybrid of the two last philosophies - giving points based in guesses in the draw + giving bonus for position in Final Standings

4) System that I mentioned before with bonus that I mentioned in the last post.

I am with the option 3). Last year, in a game done with this ranking system in a non-official MTF group in FB, I had a very tough fight with Mark Lenders and I won the YE #1 only for 1 single point (after winning both of us more than 2200 points). We both picked great, we both won a Slam, we had similar victories and that was why it was that close.

No idea mate. By the way, I can provide Excel spreadsheet to run the game next year and directly calculate the Standings and the points (if they are not done yet).

Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

I'm all for it :yeah:
At least the philosophy behind the change. Will go through the details later and let you know.

As far as I know, and I have been an an FITD manager for over a year, we don't have a FITD board. So, it's basically the managers and the rankings people who decide. So(in no particular order):

EddyDoubleD
Freak3yman84
bry17may
Pratik
Mark Lenders
BMT360
awesomedude333
bhamism
Synesthetic
Chirs. ???
Am I forgetting anyone?

@EDD: Download link for the good old spreadsheet: http://uploadir.com/uploads/inafr1fo/downloads/new

Maybe we could add some info about bhamism's auto-extractor in the OP too. He can step in for that.

That's a good idea. Maybe you could modify the template in my previous post, since all the managers are familiar with that.

Maybe you could also co-ordinate with bhamism and get the online spreadhsheet updated with the same, once everything is decided.

I didn't notice that template, that is nice and can make my work even easier :D Sadly, I am not an expert in online issues and to be fair I don't have almost free time because I work and I study and I am 15 hours out of home every day but the Excel spreadsheet can be easily done in one Christmas morning as I have 1 week of holidays from my job :) I am not sure if I would be able to help in more things appart from that, but I will help as much as I can :) At the 1st week of February I have 1 week of holidays in the university.

Yes. I like this idea of making a new spreadsheet. It works be awesome if someone add something the regular spreadsheet that would auto-detect spelling errors. I think that would give the managers a reason to want to post updates. I understand bhamism's spreadsheet detects spelling errors but I like the colorful updates. :p

Re: FITD 2015 Manager Thread | Preparing for a new season

Nice to know that bhamism finished his online Excel spreadsheet, is it more useful than the off-line spreadsheet? What are the differences between them? It has only sense to do a new off-line spreadsheet if there is something that can't be done in the online spreadsheet. I think that the online bhamism spreadsheet will be a more powerful tool, in addition I don't want to create a new spreadsheet if he created a new one unless online spreadsheets can't do things that offline spreadsheets can do.

@bhamism, I would be very pleased if I can see your online spreadsheet for managers :) I am gossip :lol:

Greetings to all of you guys! In my opinion FITD is the best game of MTF with ST and I think that with a fairer ranking system and with powerful managing tools we can make it one of the best games of MTF. Both FITD and ST recquires only a few time while they are both very tough games that recquire more than luck; intelligent strategies and solid picking through the year (of course, if we change the FITD rankings).

Bhamisms online spreadsheet is easier to use. It has an auto-extractor, the draws are taken automatically by a script he wrote. In the offline version, the managers manually copy paste the draw into the spreadsheet which obviously takes a lot more time. Secondly, it has a spell-checker. Any name that does not exactly match the two players playing the match gets highlighted. So, the spelling mistakes are easier to find.

Wow, truly awesome :eek::worship::worship: I didn't know that. Hence, for me, there is no need to spend time with an off-line spreadsheet when you have such an amazing online tool.

Thanks for the clarification mate, and my congratulations to bhamism! :worship:

I like your proposal, very nice work :worship: I guess without two sets of points, it will also be easier to keep the rankings. But I do have one question: how are we going to pass make the transition all the next year? What is going to happen with the old rankings with the old system of points?
