Injured Ferrer pulls out of Davis Cup tie

MADRID, Feb 2 (Reuters) - World number five David Ferrer has pulled out of Spain's Davis Cup world group tie against Peru because of injury, the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) said on Saturday.

"He's got a severe strain in the area between the calf and the Achilles' tendon in his left leg," federation doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro told the RFET Web site (www.rfet.es).

"He needs to rest for five or six days and take anti-inflammatories before a new evaluation so he has been ruled out of the trip to Peru."

Davis Cup captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario called up world number 37 Feliciano Lopez to take Ferrer's place for the first-round tie which will be played on clay at the Jockey Club in Lima from Feb. 8-10.

Tommy Robredo, Fernando Verdasco and Nicolas Almagro make up the rest of the team.

World number two Rafael Nadal and Juan Carlos Ferrero both opted out of the tie in order to concentrate on the hard court season.

Bad luck for Ferrer, hope he gets well soon. Spain should still be the favourite against Peru.

Poor pics:( Spain will be fine without him, but hopefully he's not injured too badly. This sucks, first Monaco, now David.

Peru's chances grow by the day...I wouldn't call ANY of Spain's 4-man team particularly reliable. :scared: However, they should still have too much for them.

Rest up Pics.

Peru were already going to make it to Day 3 with a live match, they will do it now, still winning a World Group tie with Chino Miranda won't be easy.

They will also need Emilio to cooperate, Peru needs Lucho to win both singles and then hope either to win in doubles or exploit home court advantage in a deciding 5th match. Spain has more choices/flexibility but certainly Emilio "employ players according to ranking" Sanchez may oblige  Spain is still the favourite.
