The tournament released a list of players committed to the event and Roger Federer was on that list as a late addition! Here is the link to the article about Fed and the Italian Open.

It would be good for him to have some matches on the red clay where the conditions are most similar to Roland Garros

Excellent news.

Not only does it give Rogie one last shot at the big elusive title, but this all but confirms that this is his farewell tour by playing a full clay season.

Bye bye JediFed ?

Re: Feder to play Italian Open

When I heard he was going to play clay I already hoped he would play Rome so I'm happy. Three clay events now to play. Interesting.

Because the Rome Masters is a mandatory masters, about top 44 players automatically enter into the entry list. Federer is No. 4 player. So he also automatically entered into the entry list. That's all.

FYI, according to the schedule in the official Roger Federer page, he will play in Madrid and Roland Garros, not in Rome.

Perhaps it's a farewell on Clay but I really doubt he's retiring this year, and why should he retire when he's still playing at the level he's at, he's just reached back to back masters finals, retirement should be one of the last things on his mind right now.

He's probably thinking more about playing as long as he can at a good level and possibly even breaking Connors record than retirement

Given how he currently plays, it is only a matter of time if he stays healthy

Give it a rest. You're wrong and it's been obvious for a while.

I can imagine Fed trying to get into Rome should he get knocked out in his first match in Madrid. But otherwise it seems unlikely that he will play Rome after going deep in Madrid. He probably won't want to do two back-to-back tournaments right before RG in case he goes deep into either of them.

It's a mandatory.

Not withdrawn yet and still on the enty list =/= playing

That said, he's probably going to play Rome in case he fails Madrid, which isn't unlikely IMO. Therefore it totally makes sense to wait with the withdrawal till Madrid takes place.

Not to mention, he's not gonna waste his current form only to looking his records get potentially broken from the couch. At this point he must be amazed and swimming in a serotonin sea , he's 1st in the race , showing a great level against Newgens (beating 20 years olds like time hasn't passed) + no signs of slowing down (appropriate health) AND his co-legends "struggling" with up and downs and some injuries.

Re: Feder to play Italian Open

He could win more masters , reach 30 this year and have legit shots at Wimby and USO.

Anything to keep protecting his slams record and beat the 109 mark

Not retiring any time soon , not a chance

He was asked a funny yet awkward question by an overzealous journalist after Miami.
"Do you ever think about retiring on a high, like after winning a masters like Miami?"
Fed laughed and said "Are you saying I should not come back next year?".
