Well, heard the news this morning. Andre won't defend his title and won't participate in any tour in Europe becoz he wants to be his wife Steffi who's expecting their second child.

And I was hoping to see him play...never mind. This also means he's almost certainly out of the race for number one then, since he'll be losing 650 points. Coria could easily overtake him.

Yes, I read that too but my Spanish isn't so good so I wasn't sure I had read it correctly - seems like I was right:-(( Such a shame for them.

Thanks for the link, Rosie. Yes, it would be a shame, especially when Nalbandian needs all the points he can get for the Masters. Madrid is a big chance for the Aussies to catch him, if he doesn't play...

Well, I've now heard that Hewitt has pulled out too although I don't know if this is definately true or not. If so it would be great for David (sorry Lleyton fans!), but would also devalue this tournament badly I think, especially as Agassi has already pulled out,

absences confirmed

The Spanish version of the TMS Madrid website has news articles confirming the absence of Hewitt, Coria and Nalbandian. So 4 of the top 10 missing (Schuettler will be seeded 4th!), and we still can't be sure about Grosjean, even though he hopes to play. This field is getting weaker.

Any news on JCF's heel injury, anyone?

BTW if Hewitt won't play until DC, it means he might even be the Aussie number 2 by then - his ranking will drop to about 15 after Bercy.
