Roddick, Hewitt, Henman Headline Stella Artois Field
By Tennis Week
04/28/2005

Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick will prepare for the grass-court Grand Slam by attempting to extend his reign as king of Queen's for the third straight year. Two-time defending champion Roddick, three-time champion Lleyton Hewitt and three-time finalist Tim Henman lead the field for the Stella Artois Championships set for June 6-12th at Queen’s Club in London.

Croatian Mario Ancic, a Wimbledon semifinalist last year, serve-and-volleyers Taylor Dent and Greg Rusedski, and 18-year-old French sensation Richard Gasquet, who upset world No. 1 Roger Federer on the clay courts of Monte Carlo earlier this month, are capable challengers in a formidable field.

Ancic has established a well-earned reputation as a grass-court contender with Wimbledon victories over Federer and Henman.

Sebastien Grosjean, runner-up to Roddick the past two years at Queen's Club, Thai Paradorn Srichaphan, hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, 19-year-old Czech Tomas Berdych, who beat Federer at the Olympic Games last year, Igor Andreev, Andre Agassi’s conqueror at the 2004 Stella Artois Championships, and a former junior world No.1 Marcos Baghdatis are among the other prominent players in the field.

"It’s a sparkling field," said tournament Director Ian Wight. "Lleyton, Andy and Tim are joined by an outstanding crop of young European players headed by 2004 Wimbledon semifinalist Mario Ancic and Richard Gasquet, who seemed to come of age with his performances in Monte Carlo."

For the first time since the inception of the event in 1979, every direct acceptance into the main singles draw is ranked inside the world’s top 100.

The last direct entrant is No. 94 Agustin Calleri of Argentina. Previously, the highest ranked player to gain the last direct acceptance into the draw was Julian Knowle, then ranked No.102, in 2002.

Final’s day at the 2005 Stella Artois Championships will feature a special challenge match between John McEnroe and Boris Becker to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Becker’s big breakthrough. It will be the first time that they have ever played each other on a grass court.

 I like Ian and he probably deserves one, but has had shoddy results since last Queens. One of my coaches took him to 3 sets at a satellite!
And he got so cocky after that match-I heard his friends actually wanted him to lose. Although he played off his face, and the crowd there was electric-it was unreal!

you forget that the only way of getting brits interested is by having brits involved and ian is not a no hoper he made quater finals last year! and andrew murray has a great future so both would be well deserving! and if the americans can give all their wild cards to americans (and 15 year olds being rushed in too early at that) why the hell shouldn't the brits? sorry but i think our boys are deserving!

ians main problem is that he has a shit coach! andrew castle was never a great player and worse as a coach, i don't see how anyone can be coached by someone who spends all their time presenting day time television programmes...

5/3/05 Update: ATP issued corrected list

Spot 43,44,45 in the list (originally 2 SE-spots and 1 of 5 WC's) are now occupied by Benneteau (98), Clement (101) and Lisnard (102).
So now we have 4 WC's, 7 Qualifiers and no SE-spots.
