You mean the stupid schedule (Quito, Buenos Aires, Rio) may get even more chocking? Don´t think so..
it seems Monfils only wants to play on clay from the AO until RG. At least he has a clear goal this season. But travelling from Quito to Buenos Aires takes as long as from Europe to Buenos Aires. It does not really make sense entering both Quito and Buenos Aires except maybe if you are only an alternate in Buenos Aires and not sure to enter.

Well, almost the guys playing in Quito also registered to Buenos Aires so the journey is probably not that bad

And think about all the guys playing Moscow/Antwerp/Stockholm the week after Shanghai, or the few guys playing Monte-Carlo the week after Houston, Indian Wells after Dubai (even if IW starts on Wed), or Canada after Kitzbuhel...

While it is an 8+ hr flight, it's only a 2 hour time difference, so not the same jetlag issues as traveling to/from Europe.
