“I think right now television is the best that it’s ever been and I think that it’s the worst that film has ever been – in the 50 years that I’ve been doing it, it’s the worst,” he claims. This opinion comes despite his HBO TV show about horse racing Luck being cancelled while they were shooting the second season when PETA protested about the deaths of horses on set. He is also on the look out for a new film to direct after helming Quartet in 2012 about a group of retired musicians.

Hoffman has an ocean of experience to compare the industry of today with yesteryear. “It’s hard to believe you can do good work for the little amount of money these days. We did The Graduate and that film still sustains, it had a wonderful script that they spent three years on, and an exceptional director with an exceptional cast and crew, but it was a small movie, four walls and actors, that is all, and yet it was 100 days of shooting.”

Most films today, away from the comic strip or robot adaptations, are made in around 20 days. Part of the reason is that digital technology enables filmmakers to shoot more scenes in a day than they used to, but mostly it’s to do with the downsizing of budgets as more and more films get made. The films that have been squeezed the most by this development have been the quality dramas, a genre that has a habit of calling on Hoffman’s inimitable services.

it's called The InterwebZ..

Just like porn cinemas died, the same way it's going to be with drama.

People wouldn't move from their chair for anything else but mega 3D, super action, or animation.

It's a pity, really, but it's like that.

I don't see how you can say film is the worst it has ever been. Sure there are a ton of action superhero movies but there has always been blockbuster films. There are still very goof films being made every year, in fact the last few years have produced quite a few very very good films.

The Sopranos is not on TV right now, so by definition, it is not the best it has ever been.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for season four of Lilyhammer, though.

I rarely go to the bios... why should I pay 12 euros when I have 52 inch 3d tv at home? Overpriced popcorn as well...

There are exceptions ofcourse. I will be heading to the bios for Black Mass.

yeah exactly. And honestly it's not that hard to find. If you are judging cinema today on Marvel movies then of course you are going to have a terrible opinion.

I'm inclined to agree with Hoffman here, but only if we include Netflix' series in the tv category, and we really shouldn't.

While their is lots of good stuff in foreign cinema and American films outside the studio system I tend to agree with Mr Hoffman. Not a single mainstream Hollywood film in the last 15 years or so is anywhere close to the best episodes of Enlightened,Mad Men,The Wire,The Americans,Hannibal,Broad City,Black Mirror,The Sopranos etc

Well this is what I'm saying for years now. Thank you Mister Hoffmann:worship:

You have TV shows like True Detective, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, The Wire, Hannibal, Gomorra and many more. No more cheap telenovelas to fill the programm but high quality shows with great storys, perfect acting and charakter building.

Movies are so crap for a couple of years now. I don'T really care for cinema right now.
If you take a closer look movies were the best from late 80's to early Millenium. Especially the 90's produced so many legendary movies like Pulp Fiction, Leon the Professional, HEAT, Goodfellas and many more.
You don't even find a good Thriller in these days. It's all about some washed up comedy or dumb action movies.

Bojack Horseman is one of the best shows around. Season 2 was amazing.

in terms of QUALITY of film I totally agree with Dustin. nothing creative or particularly new ever arrives. you can say 'oh well that's the same about everything! fresh ideas are gone!" but I would disagree, like Dustin mentions TV has plenty of original stuff these days

Game of Thrones, Dexter, Weeds, Breaking Bad, etc. etc. the quality of shows out has been far more consistent than film both in terms of acting and ideas IMO

At least he's not a movie star anymore, that helps.
