you are given a choice. starting today, you can either have a dominating serve or a dominating return of serve but not both. which one will you take and why?

in order to answer this question for yourself, you may want to take a look at those who have dominating serves like dr. ivo, roddick and the like. Goran too had a formidable serve in his day.

in addition, for what it is worth, Borg, to this day, attributes his 5 Wimby titles to his improved and superior return of serve. Agassi and Connors did just fine without dominating serves as they got plenty of mileage from their dominating return of serves. both of them used their return games as weapons.

so what is your answer and why? which do you prize more? a serve like roddick or a return like connors? also keep in mind that based on last year`s stats, roddick broke serve only about 18% of the time. he is returning a little better this year but the percentage of the times he breaks serve is still going to come in relatively low when all is said and done at the end of the year. in other words, it is not going to jump from 18% to 40% for instance.

I want a big serve. Nobody follows their serve to the net anyway, so all you have to do to return in today's game is block it back.

In the women's game, there are 300 who can bash from the baseline. You need a serve to be a real threat at the majors.

Both!
It takes both to be the best. Federer has it. I hope Djokovic has it too! They have both dominating serve and great return, while Ferrer, Nadal, Roddick and Davydenko have only 1 weapon.
I think Murray has both weapons too, so that's why many people predict bright future for him.

i realize it takes both to rule the game but you are being asked to choose. if you could only have one--a dominating serve or a dominating return of serve--which one would you choose and why?

I would choose dominating serve, because even if you have dominating return it still takes some effort to get the points, unless you hit winners of the return which is very rare case scenario even against bad servers.
On the other hand if you have great serve, you can have couple of aces and couple of service winners and game is yours! No effort.

now you are thinking. it makes perfect sense to me. i will have my answer at the end of the day. ok i will do it now. i would take a dominating return of serve every time.

i will provide my own reasons for it later.
