It seems to me that when Thiem goes for the big BH DTL winner that he cuts across the ball as well as over it, also that his feet are deliberately not positioned for a pure topspin shot. In addition, he doesn't let the ball get beyond him and hit late to effect the change of direction from CC to DTL.

I've never had the privilege of seeing him live, and even then my eyesight wouldn't be good enough to discern the spin at those speeds.

At the low level I play at, I sometimes hit a BH like Thiem's but it's more or less random and feels like bad technique. But Thiem seems to have made an art of it?

So, does he hit the big DTL backhand with more sidespin than Fed or Stan or Tsitsipas or Shapo etc.?

Or am I being deceived by his body shape when striking.

That's the way it looks to me as well. It surprises me that he can hit his single hander as well as he does given he seems to be cutting across it. Tsitsipas backhand looks more toppy and less likely to break down.
