Revered and top performers in any domain like the Beatles, David Beckham, Llyeton Hewitt, David Letterman, Derek Jeters, Pete Sampras et al deserve farewell tours, but should middling players like Mardy Fish throw themselves a goodbye party as in a wannabee farewell tour? Imo, it's an embarrassing show of self-glorification especially in the case of Fish who retired for all practical purposes in August 2013 right before the US Open and is coming back for a few tourneys a full 2 years later just to get the tributes and attention. And of course, ESPN at the US Open is going to be gag worthy in its gushing over-coverage of this spectacle. Ugh, get the barf bags.

This is a retarded post. Absolutely he does. At his prime he was the second best American of our generation. Then had his downfall with a mental illness that he is coming back to conquer. It's not like he is playing tournaments for a full season and riding off in the sunset at all. He is playing 3 tournaments in his own country using a PR and not even a wildcard. I never make posts here, but the OP had one of the dumber ones.

... At his prime he was the second best American of our generation ...
Damning by faint praise --- so what if he was the second best American in a generation of lackluster US players, there are over 100 countries with players on the tour, should we also celebrate with a farewell tour the retiring of their second bests, especially when that second best ranking only came at the twilight of his career when the under-performing Fish finally decided to put his full effort into tennis?

For 13 of the 15 years of his career, he was a massive disappointment for American tennis and a waste of his fabulous natural ability. It'll be a farewell tour to his shame, not his glory.

And let's remember his vanity tour comes at the expense of other up-and-coming players whose spots he's taken for nothing but his ego.

Well he is only playing a few tournaments, and considering the reasons why he had to stop playing, it's only appropriate that he gets to go out on a positive note. Nothing wrong with that.

It's not fair to call it a "farewell tour" in the vein of like a Lleyton Hewitt - Mardy Fish is an American player who used to be in the Top 10, and decided to play 3 events only in the United States to say goodbye. Absolutely he deserves it. His retirement won't be an Agassi/Roddick/Blake level event, and it doesn't need to be, but what else is he supposed to do?

Exactly this. He is not even making a "farewell tour", that's your label, he is just playing 3 tournaments, one only in doubles. Almost every player has retired in a home/favorite tournament.

Also to said he retired in 2013 and is just playing to get attention is really callous, he didn't stop cause he was boring, he had his fair share of health issues and if it was for him he would keep on playing, but sadly, he can't. Every player who's had injuries/health issue says they want to finish their career on their terms. It doesn't matter if you like the player or not, Fish's situation sucks.

Really stupid thread.

Actually the ATP has labelled it the "farewell tour" in its headline and article below. Also listen to his fawning friends say the same thing: this tour is just a homage to my buddy. Tennis deserves better than this pablum.

Mardy is not like ever hardworking Lleyton Hewitt --- an active player GS winner who announced his retirement to begin after the 2016 Aussie Open and who is a two decades top player that should be rightfully lauded --- it's the under-performing middling slacker Mardy Fish who effectively retired two years ago and only is coming back for undeserved laurels. It's a sham --- both Mardy and US tennis supporters should be ashamed for this ridiculous "farewell tour."

You're the one looking for attention with troll posts like this. Maybe the ATP is calling it a farewell tour, but I doubt Fish is, and I doubt someone who took the last couple of years off due largely to a crippling social anxiety disorder really wants a ton of "attention."

David Backham was a top player? WTF! A decent crossers yes, but was never the best player on an European team he played on, let alone the national side. He went to Real Madrid, demanded to be played as a central midfielder and that ended their reign as Europe's best side for a while. He's most remembered moment was a free kick against Greece in a draw that helped England qualify. Despite being on many great teams he rarely ahs any great big match moments. But he has a shit load of hype and relentless PR.

YES, I agree with Jerzyboy, Fish is leaving on his own terms whatever the ATP calls it. I'm hoping he can win a few matches, this week he is playing doubles with Dmitrov, last week with his buddy Andy Roddick. GO MARDY!!!!
