That´s one big problem in this thread due to inability to differentiate:

Murray represents the UK as Scot in tennis.
England played at wc and failed miserably (football).

So there´s no level of comparation.

I could rage and rage on about this subject but I'm not in front of a computer and I'm not gonna write an essay on a phone. Consider this a bookmark.

the british always been very poor in sports. basketball, handball, volleyball, hockey, ice-hockey, winter olympics => zero
tennis --> Murray but no depth at all. When Murray will retire darkness in british tennis again
boxing --> decent
cicling --> decent
summer olympics --> OK ; british were decent at home olympics, but NID they invested billions to win sth. Surely they won't repeat their succesful London 2012 campaign.
football --> average ; they have the best league in the world and great stadiums, but players are overrated mugs. They never reached the finale of Euro and won only one world cup. And this in 1966. It seems the english only can win sth. when they are host. besides of that they hardly qualify for the big tournaments or go through the group. They are on level with czech, greece, portugal, denmark, switzerland in football

Great Britain have 60 million habitants. They should do better in sports.

lol, Engalnd football team is probably the most overrated team in sport ever. You are European tier II team (Czech Republic, Portugal, Denmark) with one fluked title because of mysterious goal and being the host country. Deal with it :wavey:

The same goes for Murray. A tier II player with one fluked Wimbledon title because of mysterious draw and being the host country. Deal with it :wavey:

Britain has done very well in the Olympics in the last decade, much down to the newish lottery funding I guess, and we aren't a nation that plays many of the sports you mention or even has the capabilities to do winter sports.

I'd say we were the third best at boxing behind the yanks and Mexicans and miles ahead of any other European nation there.

Football is dreadful, and the EPL might be the most glamourous but is also a huge rip off and driven by money, and hinders homegrown talent.

As regards tennis I think it's generally an open secret that the coaching is inept compared to other places, famously Jamie Murray was better as a youngster than Andy but they saw him ruined and went to Barcelona instead. Anyway, he's Scottish lol.

We did well at the 2008 Olympics. We're also not bad at Formula One.

If you look at simply population size then that's obvious and surely not up for debate.

When you look at participation levels then Britain doesn't really underachieve, when compared to the likes of Germany and France there's a tiny number of clubs and very little interest beyond Wimbledon.

There are different sports that are popular in Britain. You're looking at it through a German perspective mentioning sports like Handball and Volleyball, which nobody in Britain cares about. Rugby, Cricket and Golf are hugely popular but have very little interest in continental Europe.

You also can't really describe the British Summer Olympics performances as only OK. They came 4th in Beijing, followed by 3rd in London. You couldn't have expected them to do any better and they certainly outperformed the likes of Germany, France, Japan, Australia and other large countries outside of US/China.

Well it doesn't help that the governing boards for both sports are both pathetic with ancient methods.
maybe it does.

it's hard to measure when you don't see the dark side of the moon..

For its size, England really lacks quality in certain sports.
The problem with its football is that there's too much money to go around and clubs just buy foreign players like crazy. There's absolutely no development of talented youth at all. I'd say be prepared for worse, because apart from Oxlade-Chamberlain and a few others, English youth have been abandoned more and more over the past years with clubs like Chelsea and City simply buying everything they can.

The UK did very well in the 2012 Olympics, but they have had absolutely no say in any Winter Olympics whatsoever. Not being a 'cold' or northern country is no excuse, you have a similar climate to the Netherlands and we've won thousands of gold medals in ice skating (even though canals and ditches never freeze over during winter, mind you).

But there are a lot of sports where you are good at:
Snooker with O'Sullivan (and a whole lot of others)
Darts (these really are British 'sports' basically)
Cycling with Froome and Wiggins (heavily doped of course, but who isn't nowadays?)
Golf with Rose, McIlroy, McDowell, Poulter, Westwood.
Tennis with Murray. Heavily underrepresented by other players though. Even we have more players in the top 100.
Rugby
Field hockey
Shinty

And New Zealand and Australia have your flag in their flag, so they kind of represent you. The latter won the field hockey world cup last week. :)

I see this a lot from our European neighbours, and it never seems to sink in. Handball, basketball, volleyball and winter sports are pretty much nonexistent in the UK. It's like saying Germany is no good at sport based on cricket, rugby and golf. Completely different kettle of fish.

Cycling decent? Come on now. Britain are the world leaders when it comes to cycling.
Olympics OK? 4th in Beijing, 3rd in London is not OK, it's damn good for a nation of 60 million (compared to other similar sized nations)

Football and tennis do need a lot of work, but for different reasons. Our football players are spoilt and pampered, have no sense of national pride and are driven purely by money and celebrity image. Tennis is still too elitist and expensive to get into as a youngster. The funding it receives is not used correctly and they never seem to learn from their mistakes.
