We all know Nadal's confidence was badly hurt after what happened at the AO. He gets lucky in Rio and wins the title there. Then loses to the Dog in IW, and in Miami he seems determined to find some confidence again. He makes it all the way to the final, but then gets routined by the thorn in his side Djokovic.

This clearly hurts his confidence as he goes on to lose to Ferrer in MC and Almagro in Barcalona. His confidence is now in ruins. Fortunately he then gets a break at Madrid as the top players withdraw or lose early, and while getting destroyed in the final his opponent gets injured and he flukes the title.

In Rome his confidence is clearly not quite back yet as he fights through early rounds, but then he routines Dimitrov and he is right back to his devastating best, only to get beaten by that man Djokovic again in the final. Every time the wounds from the AO begins to heal, there is Djokovic ruining it all. Frustrating!

Will be see another dip in form from Nadal now and an early round upset at the French? Thanks to Djokovic he just can't seem to find his best tennis after the AO devastation, and it must be hurting his confidence a little more each time...

Did the trolls on here even watch Dimitrov-Nadal? Dimitrov was garbage in that match and anyone looking for an indication of what Nadal's form would look like against a competent opponent who would actually use weapons should have taken little from it. Your narrative kind of falls apart when you recognize that Nadal had nothing but tough matches and a walking Bulgarian bye before the final.

No this ain't the same. Nadal managed to produce the kind of tennis only Nole can beat in the final, this is a big confidence boost to a man who just a month earlier couldn't hit Mugro off the court. Nadal playing like this is pretty much 99.9% a finalist in FO and only Nole can stop him, he knows it, we know it and that's confidence right there.

Nole is the best player in the world these days, if he brings his best no one can compete with him be it clay, grass or hard. But that best isn't always there and Nadal is there to pick up the scraps every time.

FO is on Nole's racket, but Nadal knows the dips will be more substantial in a BO5 match and he can snatch it there.

Losing from Nole doesn't hurt Nadal's confidence as much as losses from his former pigeons.

On the other side he was so "up and running" after coming back to beat Murray and after crushing Dimitrov. He probably thought that he will handle Djokovic with ease.
Instead, he suffered another defeat from Nole and this time on his favorite surface .... Yes his confidence should be way down ... similar as after Miami

However, the best of 5 format in RG should help Nadal to avoid defeat from Gulbis, Almagro or even Ferrer.

Nole will have to step up again and put the final nail in "dull confidence" coffin at the RG 2014 final.
