Novak Djokovic is on course to claim his third title at Indian Wells after beating Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3 6-4 in the Masters 1000 event. He will now face big-serving American John Isner in the next round.

This success is a good omen because Djokovic's two best years have coincided with him winning at Indian Wells. In 2008, he beat Mardy Fish 6–2, 5–7, 6–3 to claim the crown mere weeks after winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Later that year, he went on to reach the semi-finals of both the French Open and US Open. Anyone following the online betting at Stan James should remember this.

The following two years were not as successful for the Serbian star. He failed to win a single Grand Slam while two semi-final finishes were the best he could muster in the main four competitions.

This changed in 2011 when he won his second Grand Slam, that year's Australian Open. Beating Rafael Nadal in the final at Indian Wells 4–6, 6–3, 6–2 a few weeks later contributed to the momentum of the Djokovic juggernaut. This allowed him to claim wins at Wimbledon and the US Open, while also reaching the semi-finals at Roland Garros, matching his best record in Paris. The Stan James betting reflects this.

Djokovic's 2012 has failed to reach the heights of last year, although he did claim the Australian Open title for the third time back in January. And whenever he has won in Melbourne, he has claimed the Indian Wells title too.

This would suggest that the Serb will win this year's competition and if he can do this, the momentum could start to build again heading towards the next Grand Slam, the French Open in May.
