I saw this coming from a mile.

Last year Nadal played crap after AO, but with the help of Djokovic not showing up and a weak draw he ended up winning Madrid getting enough confidence to make the final in Rome and win the French Open. I think that was a critical point last year, and I'm afraid the same is going to happen this year.

Novak's mistake is letting Nadal gain his confidence back and that may cost his chances at the French Open.

Novak should focus on himself instead of Nadal. If he feels he needs the rest then he should take it. Last time he beat Nadal convincingly, so confidence should still be his when they meet again.

Completely agree with this. It's all in Novak's hands now, let him focus on himself.

don't see why it's relevant considering Novak beat Nadal in Rome last year so that should have deflated any confidence he gained in Madrid?

Nope. The rest will be good for Djokovic.

That was always going to be a risk, but Djokovic will know what he needs to manage his own schedule better than anyone else, so playing Madrid out of a desire to keep Nadal from winning if it impacts his own game for Rome and then RG would be much worse. He still won the tournaments but imo the cracks were showing in Djokovic's game in MC and even Miami with less consistent and focused performances. I don't know if he will really need the rest physically, but not having to try to win two more clay masters in back to back weeks will surely help with mental fatigue.

Doesn't matter... this is Clayray's year anyway.
Yup... exactly this. Didn't want to give Clayray v3.0 even more confidence before RG, but it won't matter. Clayray v3.0 OBE to obliterate Faker at FO if Novak doesn't go out to Nadal before that.

It was a 3 set match so not really. Even then FO is so different and it's BO5. His confidence doesn't matter. If Nole screws this opportunity up again he's going to be crushed mentally for RG.

Rafa and Novak, right now will be thinking of the other as much as they do about themselves.
This RG is about them a.

A smart player always keeps his eyes and pays attention to his closest rival.

Inspite of all the momentum, Rafa is the "elephant in the room" for Novak and vice versa.

So Novak's supposed to follow Nadal everywhere, preventing him from ever winning anything?
Don't you know why Fedtards suddenly start supporting Djokovic post-2010? Although he betrayed them in The Slam Wars last year.

No.

He has said to the press it's exhausting to play at such a high caliber week in and week out. He needed a rest. Why show up in Paris on fumes? He knows his body and mind better than anyone here, thanks, moving on.

Irrelevant.

Djokovic was injured during RG-14, that's the whole story.

This season Novak will routine everybody on his way to CYGS.
