16 km Leipheimer is zipping down the descent in second position, with Jan Ullrich shadowing him in third. They know that the fate of the race could be decided - in part - on the final climb of the day.

13 km The two leaders are onto the final climb of the day, the Feldberg. Straight away Gustov cracks, leaving Contador to ride ahead towards the summit.

10 km Roddy Scholz leads the Gerolsteiner train, with Leipheimer just behind. Arroyo will be taken back pretty quick. Ullrich is there, well poised. Contador has exactly a minute over the peloton.

8 km Leipheimer is finding it hard to hold the wheel of his team-mate Roddy Scholz who is driving the much-reduced peloton along at a fierce pace up these early slopes. Gustov is caught - he'll have difficulties to stay with these guys.

7 km Peter Weening attacks from the peloton! He's followed by a Liberty Seguros man, and then three other riders... The Gerolsteiner boys have hit the wall and are finding it hard now...

6 km But those five men do not last long in front and are taken back by the yellow jersey group, who ride 55' behind the leader Contador.

3 km Ullrich will lose more time to Leipheimer today - he's visibly distanced, riding with Totschnig over 100m behind now... Bobby Julich joins them...
