How many of the qualifiers beat players who did not play last week, or played on clay last week?

Almagro played Sopot. Russell played on hard in Washington.
Berdych hasn't played since Stuttgart. Haase played on hard in Washington.
Ljubicic took the week off after a stressful showing in Umag. Incidentally, Odesnik played on hard in Washington.

Fognini is the only exception, having played last at Kitzbuhel. Then again, Polansky is ranked 187 places below.

Qualifiers often find a rhythm by winning matches and are in good form going into the MD. However, upsets by qualifiers are more common on the WTA, which I have learned from my many years of PAW play.

Both Haase and Odesnik played very well in Washington. Their wins are not surprize to me. I saw both of them play at Legg Mason, and I was impressed with their game. So, I expected their victories. :)
