Borna's statement on his fb page about the "scandal"


Dear Fans,
I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a statement in an interview I gave for The Times of India while playing in Chennai.
Some of my quotes were misinterpreted.
First, regarding "the best in my generation", in and around my age group we are so lucky to have a cluster of super talented contemporaries who have most definitely pushed each and everyone of us to become better over the years. We all have a healthy rivalry. As it happens at this specific moment I have the best ranking of all the players my age but as we know in tennis that could change in 1 week as it did on many occasions between us last year. I respect all of them. Nothing is for certain in this sport and I respect each and everyone of them.
Secondly, my comparison with some of the best players in the world was taken out of context. All I wanted to say is that I am naturally a defensive player. In order to be better, I need to work on being aggressive as much as possible. In this statement they were supposed to use as examples, but I was not quoted the way I wanted. I utterly respect players who are amongst the best of our era and multiple Grand Slam champions and I in no way meant to be disrespectful in anyway.


Anyway, you can jump back from the hate train on to the hype train, and back to the hate train later on. Coric will stay a hot topic in tennis for years to come.

As much as i like borna its a stupid statement to make at all. He clearly does not understand what a generation is. Its more than just being born in the same year as him

Chris, you're an intelligent guy. You clearly know how the media operate, as you have studied journalism. They ask you one question, you give them a straight yes or no answer and guess what? :lol: They then quote you in an article as having said that.

In this case, that is exactly what has happened and ontop of this Borna's mother toungue is not English. Borna is a confident guy and he doesn't doubt himself much at all, but that doesn't make him arrogant.

That is what I meant, actually. Even in his own Facebook post, it says ''Generacija igrača rođena 1996'', but in the English translation 1996 is not mentioned.

So he probably was talking about how he is the best of players born in 1996, which was wrongly put down as best of his generation.

but what he did say is that he is the best ranked player his age. there's really no reason to point that out because everyone knows that so in no matter what context the comment was made it still sounds like he's boasting even if he didnt mean it that way

How do you know he wasn't posed the question and then he merely replied with a simple 'I think, yes' and now they have quoted him as saying that?

Just another case of the media twisting words and blowing things out of proportion. I doubt Coric meant to come off as cocky as it appeared.

your probably right but on his facebook page thats exactly what he says. that he is the best player ranked his age.There is no i think. yes he goes on to say that only for now and it could change but there is just no reason to say it.

and keep in mind im a fan but i dont see the need here.

In tennis terms, for young players "generation" was always the players born in the same year, for juniors every year makes a difference, dont know what some of you are talking about.

Hm, nice to see him go out of his way and comment and not let this completely factually correct comment to drag him down. If I was him, I'd say I stand by what I said and explain what he meant which is what he did. No need to apologise for stating facts.
