AMERSFOORT, Netherlands –– Juan Ignacio Chela upset French Open champion Albert Costa 6-1, 7-6 (4) Sunday to win an Energis Open final shortened because of rain.
The championship match at the clay-court tournament was delayed 1 hour, 45 minutes because of showers, and organizers reduced the final from best-of-five sets to best-of-three.
Play also was interrupted for more than 2 hours with second-seeded Chela ahead 4-2 in the second set.
The top-seeded Costa saved a match point at 5-3, and Chela then served for the match but double-faulted twice to make it 5-5 in the second set.
Each player held serve, but Costa squandered points with four errors in the tiebreaker, including an easy drive-volley hit wide on match point to give the 21-year-old Chela his second ATP title.
