Since he'll become no. 1 if he wins the whole thing, that would make sense - I assumed he had taken a couple of weeks off and was saving all his energy specifically for this event.

Looking at that field, I can only credit Schuettler and Mirnyi for turning up and thinking that they have any chance at all to make a significant impact. So good luck to them, and of course to Mr Fashionista himself, Stefan K., in front of his home crowd (last year he won the first set against Gaudio and then lost 1 and 0. Painful, but true to form sadly...).
