Chennai R1: Nadal def Montcourt 6-2, 6-4

For a straight sets win, that was way more stressful than it should have been. Maybe not stressful, just pesky.

That first set could have been 6-0. Rafa just had a teeny tiny problem with his serve in the first set: mainly, he couldn't hold it to save his life. Got control of it more in the second set (that isn't saying much).

His returning game, however, was very good. He was attacking on some points, and painting the lines some (including the baseline a few times). He did his best when he was hitting it deeper. It was nice watching him do that a bit more. Montcourt hit some great shots, though. And got some winners he had no business getting. Props to him. There were some really good rallies in the match, being won by both players. Not always ending on UE's, either.

He played so much more aggressive on the return. It was odd. And how many MP's did he waste? He'd better cut that out immediately.

First match rust is normal, so it wasn't anything too bad. Just has to work some of the kinks out. And all those wacky unforced errors (mainly on his own serve) were definitely kinks. Now if he keeps playing that way, he's going to be leaving Chennai shortly.

who's going to beat him?
who's going to beat him?
Someone who can break Rafa's serve (Montcourt did that), and hold their own serve (which Montcourt wasn't so good at).

With his draw, Rafa can probably get away with it for at least one more match. But after that, anything is possible.
If he does not improve the % of his first serve I'm afraid Misha will have him with vodka on rocs. It's not normal to waste so many MP against No.123 ATP. Expected win anyway!

Good effort Mathieu :bigclap:

Need to sort out that serve, it's too weak.

Not the best from Rafa, but he'll improve as the week goes on.

The inability to close out the match was odd, to say the least. It wasn't Montcourt godly shots, it was Rafa's errors more than half the time.

I'm happy to see tennis and Rafa again, the outfit suits him (though his nervous habits were more obvious than ever, the never-ending tugging on the pants, calling for the towel after every stroke and generally looked unhappy on court - maybe it was the humidity).

He looked like he could use a little more vacation.
Never in doubt.

I dont know about his outfir tho..
Come on Rafa!
Oh, thanks for the match analysis, rogirafafan86.
Rather rusty performance from Rafa, but that's not unusual after an off-season break. He'll surely improve during the tournament.
Ram, Eschauer, Garcia-lopez in Nadal's way of the Semis ... he could play right handed and still beat them.

Oh great. You probably just jinxed him. :( ;)

Seriously, though. It'd be nice to start the year with a tournament win.
You seen right through me CMuzza ;)
