The key was PHM continually moved Copil laterally. Copil showed a big serve but it wasn't too effective on this slow clay. PHM also had an unusually good first serve percentage.

Kept expecting PHM to randomly beat himself, but he was really solid. Nice pressure on the opponent, constant weight on the shots, but without overhitting. Good height over the net on the forehand in particular - perhaps on clay he's not as tempted to go for silly winners at this stage in his career, and thus keeps a more even keel mentally as a result.

I keep waiting for Copil to break through into the top 100 but after watching this match, I think it's going to be a long wait. He has a strong serve and strikes the ball well but he hits too many errors. PMH played well but Marius made life easy for him and he folded badly in the 2nd set.

very good for PHM, best result this season for him, will be back in top 100 now, hopefully he can stay and start a Haas like late career comeback.

PHM winning 5 routine matches in a row.

Q1: Szekely, 6-1 6-2
Q2: Rochus, 6-1 6-4
Q3: Albot, 6-3 6-1
1R: Mahut, 6-3 6-1
2R: Copil, 6-3 6-2

Can he beat Monfils?
