Injury forces top-ranked Bryan brothers to withdraw from Masters Cup

SHANGHAI, China -- American twins Bob and Mike Bryan pulled out of next week's Tennis Masters Cup doubles tournament because Mike has an elbow injury.

The Bryans, members of the U.S. Davis Cup team, are the world's No. 1-ranked doubles pair.

They'll be replaced in the field by Israel's Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.

"I am extremely disappointed that I won't be able to compete in the Tennis Masters Cup this year," Mike Bryan said. "Unfortunately I have had a problem with my elbow for the past couple of weeks and it hasn't recovered in time to be ready for the tournament."

The Bryans won the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup doubles title in 2003 and 2004.

This is really bad for Davis Cup, an injured Bryan brother, a Roddick who's played one match in 2 months, and Blake who couldn't win a meaningful match if his opponent had a badminton racket.

I'm sure it's precautionary, if it was that bad, one would assume he wouldn't have played Basel and Paris, etc., since he says it's been "a couple weeks"

DC is not for over 3 weeks and they've played more than enough tennis to be match fit.

They'd probably lose out in the end anyway like in the slams, where all the top doubles teams are motivated.

And in the end they have a bigger chance of winning the DC than TMC.
