Herbert was leading with break until 5-3 and his serve, then he was broken. But still first set has been won by Herbert in tie break with two mini-breaks.
Second set was much tougher for young French prospect. Broke to 1-3, but came back and won 4 straight games to take a lead 5-3. Later Alex defended MP on his serve, but Herbert was able to close this match in straight sets with his own serve to love, making me very happy for this result. :yippee:
Really good chance for main draw, he is favorite against Williams in next round IMO, but I don't expect it will be easy match.

Re: Brisbane QR1: [4]Herbert def. Zverev 7-6(2) 6-4

Expected. Nothing against Zverev, but Herbert won 7 games against De Schepper a few weeks ago in their Reunion Island friendly match. Hence that was a sign that Herbert is in a great shape and ready to rock the tour with his huge serve in 2015.
Thank you for that reminder, dear Spanish friend. That is indeed good sign for Herbert before his tonight's match vs. Williams, because there is no doubt that Kenny is much better player than Rhyne and I hope that boost of confidence will help him rampage straight to the main draw! Fingers crossed for Kenny too in his campaign at Noumea. :wavey:

Wouldn't say expected/nid. Herbert was 1.80 to win this match in the starting odds of few bookies..
I did however place bet on Herbert -2.5 games 1.96, luckily he didn't lose 2nd set then.

Expected result imo...Zverev outside of clay is very ordinary at this stage of his career but I guess he will get better given he's only a kid still

24 isnt really that old anymore. i mean, think of who the top young guns challenging the top players today are. nishikori raonic, dimitrov, thiem, goffin..all of them are in the 20-25 age range
I wouldn't exactly say that Thiem and Goffin are challenging the top players. The only one doing any of the challenging there is Nishikori, a 25 year old.

And just because they're the youngest "prospects" doesn't exactly make them young. The sport hasn't changed since Murray, Nadal, Djokovic and Del Potro (even the likes of Cilic was winning titles regularly) were genuinely establishing themselves and these players you mentioned have done nothing in comparison. It's a poor time for upcoming ability, without a doubt. Calling a guy who's almost 24 a young gun is just ridiculous. Nobody was calling Djokovic a young gun when he won in Australia in 2011. The term seems proportionate with a certain lack of results on this forum.
