I would not give any excuse for Ferrero, I have not watched the match to comment, but he was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second and was 4-1 in the 3rd - that says pretty much for his current form - up and down.
I'd also like to quote the author of the thread and leave people judge themselves about her (basic) knowledge of tennis in last few years.

I can't believe Behrend has beaten JCF and Verdasco here. Any time I have seen Behrend he has been a topspinning grinder with a game straight out of the early 1980s. I would not have picked him to come through Verdasco and JCF. I guess they just didn't have the patience.

We're pretty used to this by now.
