Chang is worth mentioning here, even though he will not be picked by most people here

Nadal is and was great at it thanx to this spin

Hewitt could always piss you off with these crosscourt countershots

Federer has a great court coverage, but his game is not so defensive

Agassi was playing quite close to the baseline so he couldn't run down every ball

Nalbandian is a sad story

Grosjean was good in his prime, but not very good when you want to determine the best one

dunno, it's always hard to choose, because the court speed and racket technology was different

Very possibly Michael Chang.

Hard to believe Borg hadn't been mentioned before this post as well.

Chang or Nadal on slower surfaces, Federer and his slice on quicker surfaces.

Nadal won his slams on clay as an attacking player first and an amazing defender 2nd, Hewitt won his slams as an incredibly defender first, and really revolutionized the art of retrieving/counterpunching, I think whilst he may not be the best defender ever, he certainly is the best of recent times.
