David was cruising until 5-0 in the first and then just started playing terrible tennis and got down 0-4 in the 2nd set. he right the ship and rattled off 6 games in a row but..wow will he have to improve. losing 7 games to ymer is just not okay

Huge mess indeed. 5-0* up in the first set and 0-4* 0-15 down in the second.
Ymer was solid throughout, I saw him win a Futures here in The Netherlands less than a year ago, so it's a bit surreal to see him in R3 of a 500 against Daveeeeed now. His development is going really fast.

Expected result but Ymer did his part. Yes, it would have been more routine had Ferrer not made so many UEs (those DFs in set 1 :facepalm, but Ymer gave it his all against some tough opposition, coming from qualies as well and having to save MPs in previous round. He'll get better with time.

Ferrer's ball toss was all over the place in the first set. He seemed to rectify that in the second but started spraying UEs everywhere instead. Could just have been a focus issue I guess. He did well to turn the set around from 0-4 down though and finished playing good tennis.
He'll need to play much better if he faces Kohli, but expect his level will go up.

Nonetheless good tennis from the youngster. He has a big FH and decent serve when on. Kyrgios would've put on much more of a fight though. Ferrer's level boomed down at a point hitting a lot of DF's and UE's but apart from that he got the job done. He'll need to raise his level if he wants to challenge Nadal in the semis.

Looks like he doesn't play well in Barcelona after 2012.
Kohli is famous for choking vs Spanish players, so Ferrer will be OK, tomorrow.

Elias won more games than I expected, mostly because Ferrer was totally off his game for some parts. But ymer really did play decent tennis after going down 0-5 in the first. The kid's got solid technique off both wings and good speed. I hope he learns from this match.

Kyrgios couldn't even get past Ymer so let's not pretend he would have been any more of a threat to Ferrer.
Ymer has had a good tournament this week and it should give him confidence for the future. He needs to add a bit more power to his game but he has a lot of potential.

Problem with Ymer is lack of consistency. Even if Ferrer has been in the top10 forever and chews youngsters for breakfast, you can't lose 6 games in a row. That's not acceptable on ATP-level. (maybe in WTA but thats another question)
Ymer needs a more powerful serve, and if he can't find enough power he needs to find a way to use placement and variety much better. Ofc Ferrer is one of the best returners on tour, but it was evident against Kyrgios too. With good placement Ymer could setup his forehand on clay, like Nadal and Ferrer does all the time. He needs to play smarter and construct points, and most importantly not give away points for free. Taking huge risks is OK in the return games, but in his own serve games he can't gamble and go for broke. If he keeps that up he will lose 6 games in a row vs many of the ATP-level players.
Luckily Ymer is still young and with more experience his matches will be less of a rollercoaster ride.
