Good first and a generally good third set from Don. Had his chance to win in straights, after GGL was up a break in the second set after breaking in a long game at 3-*2, but he got too passive in the second set and it cost him. GGL looked very flat in the first set and a quarter, tons of errors early in rallies and on returns, no sharpness in his shots, movement nor serve. But he started raising his intensity and being more aggressive from the baseline and with his serve after he fell behind, and it payed off for him. His competitive spirit really showed itself today although he was mostly outplayed from a game standpoint.

Don was aggressive with his forehand and in coming to the net the first set, and parts of the second and third but got tight and passive in critical stages in both sets and he nearly choked away his advantage. Led *5-3 in the third set, which became 5-5 30-30. But he held on to take the victory. This is another character-building win, he could have gone away after the second set, but he hung in and focused when need be. Showing a lot more maturity and self-belief and has really started to grow into his game and as a professional.

Young beats the Bangkok defending champ. 6-1, 6-7, 7-5

Good job Don, The fact it went 3 was only to balance the match time the Andreev retirement and playing the defending event champion

Depending on the other match very close to Young-Monfils semi which will tick off a lot of people.

Worth staying up til 4ish USA time

The final game, GGL really self-destructed with all of those loose errors off the forehand. One would think Don would be the one to falter but goes to show when you're not confident, you don't pull out matches like this.

Titlist points down the drain for GGL. His ranking is back to where it probably should be.

Don wasn't mediocre, he was significantly better than GGL was overall. GGL was really in it solely because he was fighting hard and Don got tight on big points. GGL was the one who was mediocre.

Young has a good forehand, a lot of people say he doesn't have weapons, but that shot is versatile. He can hit it with pace, he gets good angles with it, hits it with spin and kick it up high on the opponents' BH, he goes DTL with it well, and it's hard to read, it's a clean, consistent shot.

He's got a lot of talent, I can understand not liking him from an attitude perspective, but his game is entertaining to watch when on.

Don's playing with more thought and patience these days and it's paying off. GGL looked angry a lot of the time. I hope Don makes it to the semi to play Monfils. That should be interesting.

Average quality match, some decent rallies but not the highest level of play overall. Guille looked to be struggling a bit with the humidity, he just seemed so lethargic throughout. Then again, he's not exactly the most energetic chap under normal circumstances...

Donald was more solid, more patient when he needed to be and (outside of the US Open run) is showing signs of making a real ATP player of himself. :)

Good to see him bounce back after the bagel tie-break. GGL is poor right now but this it is always good to pull out a close one

GGL really was spraying. I mean Young did play great against Wawrinka. Here he really didn't show much offense or defense. If he managed to keep it in, especially in the first and last set, GGL would miss the by the third ball. Just neutral shots from Donald, very few offensive slices or drop shots.
