Terrible, awful result.
A true shame it didn't end in a straight-sets win for Pouille, because honestly, at 4-4 in the third, it seemed like the only option. But even if Pouille has made some TREMENDUOUS progress in so little time, he couldn't acquire the mental fortitude needed to close it out easily. (He's known for his mental fragility.) So, naturally, he let that service game go and the 3rd set too.
End of 3rd set and 4th set aside, Pouille played an excellent match overall. His FH was beasty (especially in the first two and a half sets), his serve was great. I knew he had all of this in him, but he just needed to become more mature. He lost, but elements are assembling, like a puzzle. Now there is no doubt he'll become a big contender for Slams in the relatively distant future.
Monfils, on the other hand: same old. I do not understand how anyone can appreciate such a moronic character. He keeps on faking injuries, disturbing his opponent when he's about to serve, "Allez"/"Come on"-ing when the opponent makes unforced errors and double faults, doing unnecessary theatrics, etc.
Ballbashing Nation is not a real nation, but Monfils is its proverbial Prime Minister. I don't call his play talent, but it certainly is having too much audacity. He's a brainless showman, a clown with unfinished and awfully elaborate acts.
